View Full Version : The NEW Litepanels MicroPro released
Marius Scholtz April 18th, 2009, 06:58 PM Introducing The New Litepanels MicroPro on-camera light. In addition to increased output, the MicroPro provides a broader source, which gives a more wrapping, HD friendlier quality of light.
It doubles the light of the very popular Litepanles Micro. The compact black MicroPro is ideally suited for mounting on an ENG, DV or DSLR camera. It offers luminous, soft, directional lighting with the same outstanding characteristics that make Litepanels an integral part of television, broadcast news and motion picture productions worldwide
You can see it here: Litepanels LP MicroPro on-Camera Light Kit, LED (http://www.gomediamonkey.com/litepanels-lp-micropro.htm?c=28)
Dan Brockett April 18th, 2009, 07:13 PM Hi:
1. How many 5mm LEDs in the array?
2. Is the housing plastic or metal?
3. How does output factor against the LP Micro and the new Prompter People Microbeam that has 144 LEDs?
Dan
Ned Soltz April 18th, 2009, 07:52 PM HI, Dan
Neither Litepanels site nor the press release I received yesterday provide any more specifics. Seems to be the same plastic housing as the original Micro. Anxious to get a look at it on Monday as well as to compare it to the Prompter People offering. I do like my original Micro but nothing compares to the Zylight Z90.
Will you be at NAB?
Ned
Andy Wilkinson April 19th, 2009, 03:47 AM I just knew this would happen!! (Just bought the OLD LitePanels Micro last week). Ah well, so be it. It does look quite a bit bigger.
Marius Scholtz April 19th, 2009, 07:39 AM Hi Dan,
Here is some more information.
1. 96 LED's 8x12
2. Yes, the housing is plastic like the standard Micro, yet sturdier. The key in keeping it light and ideal for use with camera stabilizers. Camera-ball is metal unlike Micro.
3. Output is at least double, approx. Wattage equiv. is 55W
Photometrics:
2 ft/0.6M - Footcandles is 100 and LUX is 1100
4 ft/1.2M - Footcandles is 52 and LUX is 560
6 ft/1.8M - Footcandles is 28 and LUX is 300
I will update our website with this information
Just a heads up, we had to update the pricing to adhere to MAP. But for all DVinfo memberes here is a code for $25 off. The code is valid until 4/30/2009. code: lpmp989019
Peter Corbett April 22nd, 2009, 06:15 PM Marius,
Do you have the lights in stock?
Cheers,
Peter

From these specs:

9W power draw delivering 55W of equivalent incandescent light power. Pretty good.
Chris Li April 23rd, 2009, 08:11 AM bigger, heavier and runs off 6 AA batts. or AB Powertap on a pro camera. Interesting to compare photometrics with Litepanel mini
Marius Scholtz April 23rd, 2009, 09:08 AM Hi Peter, yes I am glad to say we were the first dealer to receive stock and are now shipping.
We ship same day on all orders. Regular UPS ground will deliver the next day for most of the East Coast. You can view our shipping chart here: media monkey Pro Film and Video Tools (http://www.gomediamonkey.com/shipping.php)
A correction on the camera-ball: It is not all metal, there are plastic parts but way better than the one that comes with the regular LP Micro.
Thanks,
Marius
Nate Haustein April 25th, 2009, 03:58 AM Double the blinding power!
No seriously though, I thought the original micro did a great job in adding just enough light when I needed it during a few weeks of nighttime doc shoots. It would be nice to have a wider spread of light with the new unit though, shame I just bought mine in February.
The lithium batteries are well worth it - I'm pretty sure it's been more than 7 hours so far...

Seems capable of a lot of light. The MicroBeam 128 is rated at 185 LUX at six feet and it has more LED's. The use of AA batteries is commendable, keeps the weight lower. The spread problem of the standard Micro forced me to buy the MicroBeam, good to see they listened.

Steve,
How do you like your Microbeam so far? Is it hard to get it to an acceptable 3200k with the provided filters? I currently use the sony 10/20's but was looking for something that puts out a little more light for a longer period of time.
Thanks,
Steve

I have not used it at an event yet. It is plenty birght and has a decent spread. I am going to drop by a photo supply store and get CTO's somewhere in-between the supplied ones which look to me to be CTO 1/4 and CTO full.
Randy Johnson May 4th, 2009, 06:35 PM I know this may be a difficult question to answr but but how much light do the new litepanels put out compared to a lowel i-light at 55 watts?
Jim Andrada May 4th, 2009, 11:27 PM Anyone know which cable it would take to attach the Micro Pro to an A/B battery (PowerTap)
Just got my light this AM!

Jim, you would need a DTAP cable, unfortunately the DTAP (or XLR cable) for the MicroPro is not yet availble but I am glad to report that it is in the works. Sorry no ETA at this point. I will update the post when it becomes availble.
Eric Pasarin June 4th, 2009, 09:59 AM I just received the micropro yesterday. Haven't had much time to play with it, but I have 2 questions.
Does it come with 2 or 3 filters? mine came with 2 but the box said 3. This leads me to question #2.
When you click on the dial so that it goes on, does it turn quite a bit before the lights even start to go on? it seems I have to turn the dial a good 1/3 of a turn or more (havne't measured) before the lights even start to come on dimly.
This mixed with the first question makes me think maybe this was a defect? I purchased it from B&H and maybe it was a return that was missing parts. I'll be calling up litepanels later, but can anyone who has it confirm this? thanks.

The easiest thing might be to call Lite Panels. Here is there contact info:
Litepanels (http://www.s131567196.onlinehome.us/contact/index.asp)
On the dimming issue... after the light comes on, can you then dim down below the point where it initially comes on. Sometimes dimmers have to be turned past a point, then backed up. (Also, it seems dimmers vary in quality. Some are "tuned" to the light they are used with, while others have spots where a short movement can cause a big change. I don't know how the Lite Panels dimmers are expected to operate, but they should be able to answer you.)
And my experience with B&H is that if something is missing in the package, they take care of it efficiently. In my case, a coolux light, the package came from the factory with missing parts.
Marius Scholtz June 4th, 2009, 11:07 AM LitePanels did ship the initial batch minus one filter (should be the diffusion filter that is missing). There should absolutely be 3 filters.
We ordered in a bunch of them to send out to our customers that did not receive it.
I will gladly pop one in the mail for you (if you bought from us or not). email request to marius@gomediamonkey.com and include your address.
The knob is not a defect, I tested it over many units and confirmed it with LP. You should start seeing light at about the 65% mark (where the index mark on the knob meets the seam in the housing) of the dimmer and the full bright at 100%. It at first do not show any light and yes this is normal. I have tested this both with fresh batteries and the AC adapter.
I hope this helps.
Eric Pasarin June 4th, 2009, 11:29 AM Hello, thanks for your replies. That seems to be it. I guess it's not a defect after all. Just wanted to make sure as it was a big purchase. Thanks kindly for your offer to send out the filter. That's awesome. To be honest, I would have purchased from you guys, but you're in NJ. silly tax :( Though I will definitely recommend you to people.
Jim Andrada June 4th, 2009, 12:01 PM Ditto on the "only two filters" and yes it was the diffusion filter that was missing. I got mine from B&H so maybe I should give them a call on it.
Also, I can confirm that you have to crank the dimmer qute a ways until you get "ignition".
So far I really like it. I find that I'm using it on my still camera quite a bit as it gives a much softer light than the flash without the hard shadows - very nice with metallic parts.
