Your friend is wrong. I'm suspecting you have the "wrong" scart
cable. Some scart cables have both in and out and others are
only for one way "traffic" (either in or out).

I'm assuming you have hooked up the cable to your composite
out on the XL1S and put it in VCR mode and then played back
the tape?

You also need to setup your VCR to the external port and not
the default cable connection.

Does your VCR has any other inputs?

i am using the STV 150 stereo video cable provided with the xl1s (White Yellow Red RCA connectors). One end is hooked to the back of the camera (right under the headphone terminal) and the other end to the scart adapter (also provided with the xl1s) and then to the vcr.

The VCR only has a scart port which is usually connected to the TV

Stefano,
Rob is right, It should work.

Just to make it clear – you want to copy something from a DV tape onto a VHS tape.

It sounds like you connected everything correctly.

Maybe you have to make sure that your VHS is set to the right input channel – AV1 or AV2.

To make sure a video signal is coming out of your XL1s, and to check that the cable is not broken: try attaching the SCART adapter directly to the TV. Set the TV to AV the same as with the VHS (or a symbol of a rectangle with an arrow going into it). You should see what you are playing from your XL1s on the TV.

If you can’t, then maybe you have a bad cable, or bad SCART adapter, or something is not working with your XL1s that otherwise should.

I hope this is a help,

DK

thank you guys,
it eventually worked with a new VCR that has yellow red white rca input adapter. The cable was ok. The problem was probably due to bad channel set up on the VCRs that i tried with.
