I'm going to be shooting a documentary on some bands and we will need to be shooting inside some dark clubs. I suggested an on camera light to the director to buy for us.

It's the Cool-Lux LK-2050 Mini-Cool On-Camera Light .

I will be using the Canon XL1s.

Do you guys think this is a decent light? If so, i will go ahead and tell her to get it. If you have any other suggestions for a light that isn't too intrusive or big, that would be great. thanks.

You'll need some power for the light as well. Battery belt?

good thinking Don. I hadn't even thought about that.
Can you recommend a particular battery belt? Or is there any other way to power the light? For example, I have an MA200. Can I run the battery from the back of that to the light?

Nope. You'll need a belt or juice box to run it. Best best is to look in BH Photo for a belt. I use old time lead acid batteries, they work great but are HEAVY. There are NiMH belts so take a peek at BH.

I also use lead acid batteries. Heavy indeed! But it gives me 3 hours of light for a very low price!

The Mini-Cool should be available in a kit that includes a battery and belt pack.

Bh has our item 8000 and for on the couch stuff it would be a great start to your lighting array.

For on camera there are many options out there.

Chimera makes nice Microbank kits for all kinds of lights for your consideration.

If I were you and they would pay.....

I would get a Dedo Light with a Micro bank

You can shoot nice stuff real close and if you need too you can throw the light from the dedo a block away for a fill.
Lots of ways to go.

Having a dimmer is the most the most important thing for an on-camera light. Can't beat the Frezzi dimmer mini-fill. Get a Microbank too.
