So I was filming something today fully zoomed in, I switched on macro and put the focus ring into the unfixed position. However the lens would simply not focus in any further. Even more strangely there was a delay in when pulling my focus back to infinity.

I guess the best way to describe it would be that if you pulled your focus to 1m but your lens stopped working at 1.2m, so when pulling the focus back out, the lens didn't start moving again until you reached 1.2m on the ring. Only probably with that is, the ring wasn't in a fixed position and even then it only happened with macro on.

Maybe it's a firmware problem?

Just discovered the delay is at maximum when zoomed in with macro on, it has no delay when zoomed out to a certain point, so i figure it's just how macro works... Silly me.

Must have been a bit paranoid after my counter balance switch was off and the camera slid violently back until it hit the safety lock - near misses like that are fairly scary.

I recall that's what the EX1 manual quotes. Perhaps I'm wrong, I've not looked at it recently, defected to 5dmk2.

The manual states for focus ranges:

800mm to inf with macro off
735mm to inf, tele and macro on
50 mm to inf, wide and macro on

So at tele, macro makes little difference. I have found that it only has an effect wider than about 40%. Also, macro has no effect if focus is set to full manual.

The macro function works only at focal lengths shorter than 25mm (or there abouts).
