My VX2000 as SP set as a default, but I'm wondering... which of the two is better, and why.

Also, what are your preferences, and why?

SP is the mode you want. Why? the tape runs faster, less chance for dropouts.

LP runs longer. Useful for events that require continuous recording. But the quality won't be there. Use SP if recording something that you will edit later.

More tape used to record data = less chance for a tape aberration to cause a boink.

Fewer boinks = happier shooter

Happier shooter = happier viewers.

As a side, but related, note this is where Sony's DVCAM stakes its claim to "reliability". That is, DVCAM cameras and decks, when recording in DVCAM, roll the tape even faster than the standard SP mode speed of DV. That's why you'll only get around 40 mins. of DVCAM recording time on a cassette rated for 60 mins. of normal SP recording.

Don't forget Pana's pro DV format. It's even got a wider track than DVCAM. :-))
