First, apologies if this thread has already appeared on this board, and also if it appears to belong in the audio forum.

Does anyone have any experience of mounting a mic on the accessory shoe of the XL1s when using a matte box with a French flag on top?

The standard on-camera mic is hiding down behind the flag, which can't be an ideal position.

Using the shoe does raise the mic position but not enough. For example, when mounting the Sennheiser MKE300 with its built-in foot on the shoe it could still benefit from being two or three inches higher.

As I am thinking of using a Sennheiser K6/ME64 combination on the camera, a shoe-mounted shockmount such as the Beyer EA86 would seem suitable, but I wonder if:

a) it would be tall enough and

b) there is anything taller available?

The matte box is the Formatt wide-angle model. Ideally, I would be looking for hardware generally available in the UK.

The LightWave Systems MM-XL1 Mini-Mount raises the standard XL1 mic (or any other mic, incl. Senn & others) up high enough from the XL1 mic clamp to clear the top of just about any matte box.

...and as a bonus will leave the accessory shoe free...

Thanks, Chris! I'd appreciate any further information on stockists, availability etc., especially in the UK.

Hmm, not sure about the UK, but you may try Optex. There are bound to be others as well. Any other UK members can suggest a place?
