I have a hvx205a which is the same as hvx200a and I am trying to import 720i 24pn via firewire into macobook / imovie hd. First of all my macbook does not recognize the p2 cards within the camera. sometimes it sees it in imovie then when I try to import it starts playing a file and you see it on the lcd /on camera then it stops abruptly saying I am importing half images and I need to check sp and lp settings. I can import dv files from tape easily via firewire and control it from my macbook.
I can also import 480i from the p2 card. But for some reason unknown to me it will not import 720i 24pn or 1080i 24p.

Does Imovie HD not like dvc-pro?

I am just editing some simple b-roll content.

Do I need to get better editing software?

I really doubt iMovie supports the HVX200. You need to get Final Cut Studio.
