Are there any DAT/XL1 users here. It seems like a few are using Mini Disc for field production. I'm considering using DAT, but wonder if anyone has encountered any drawbacks, other than cost and size/weight. The Tascam DA-P1 seems like a contender. Are there other units I should consider or problems with the Tascam? Thanks.

I use a TASCAM DAP1, not for field use or video, but I can say that it is a good reliable machine. I am not sure how robust it is though. I don't move it a lot so I am not sure how well it stays calibrated in those kind of situations. It does have decent balanced mic ins and preamps with phantom power.

Other than that, it is a bit pricey.

I have a Sony TCD-D8. Nice, compact DAT unit. Very reliable. About $800.00

I use it for high-end recordings, usually for radio interviews.

But I also use it for shooting weddings. I usually set it up next to musicians. I like the format because it is a 120min cassette.

I have gone minidisc or wireless for grooms.

The thought of using a tape didn't sit well with me, so I went with a HardDisk recorder. I have a Korg D-12 that will hold about 18 hrs of CD quality on one channel, 4.5 hrs on 4 channels. It's big, and doesn't travel well, but I'm working on that :)

Overall, the digital quality is fantastic. I can do much more than with a Dat, and as soon as I can figure out how to run it on batterys...
