I have a simple question which may have already been answered. Is there a program for the pc to allow me to plug in my canon xls1 through the pc and record all my footage directly to my dvd burner without storing to the hard drive first. Trying to save wear on the cannon. I have sonic mydvd which says it can do that but it seems to hang up when I try it. I plug directly into the dv500 board when I try it.

That would be very hard to do in software and I don't think this
is yet quite possible in full DVD quality.

Why are you savin wear on the Canon when doing this? I'm
assuming you are still going to record to tape first? So this will
save you nothing.

Unless you want to record straight to your computer without
going to tape. Personally I would NOT record to DVD in this
case due to loosing quality and setting up a much harder
environment to do editing.

In that case simply hook up your PC/laptop and capture in DV
to your harddisk. Or get a direct-to-disk solution.

Do **NOT** do this. You cannot edit from a DVD. With DVD you
will at least need to de-mux the footage first (at least on most
NLE's).

But even more important you will loose a lot of information that
is coming from your camera and at the least some quality as well.

You still have NOT explained WHY you would want to do this. Are
you saying you are also recording to tape and want to use that
for backup? That's quite possible and wise to do.

But you can capture that tape to do the editing. Or you can
record to your computers harddrive and work from that. After
you are done burn the files to a data DVD for example.

This is a much better workflow.

I agree with Rob, you dont want to edit from DVD. If nothing else, DVD drives arent fast enough.

However, that being said, there is a way to transfer your Mini-DV direct to DVD. Its not software though. Its a set top DVD recorder. They are relatively cheap now...Lite-On makes one for $330 with a firewire input. Check their site at www.liteonit.com . It is model LVW-5001 . Hope that helps.

I did want to save my original footage to dvd. I ordered Easy Media Creator which has a plug and burn program so I can go from the Cannon direct to Dvd, hope it works as they say, you never know till you buy it. Of course than it's too late.
