Are there any websites <or some of your sites> which show example professional footage produced by the actual XL1-s. I want to see how clear the picture is and other aspects of the footage.

PART 2:

Without modifying the resolution, what is the largest screen size you have ever seen the XL1-s produce a clear picture on? Would you still see a clear picture @ the movie theater size screen?

Hard to show on the internet... DV looks totally different on a computer screen. Better to see on a video monitor or television. You need a tape, not a website.

Typically any video on the web is going to be compressed quite a bit (and usually presented at about 1/2 resolution, so it may be difficult to come to any conclusions regarding the capabilities of the camera.

Steven Soderberg's new film, Full Frontal, comes out next month, and it was shot primarily on the xl1s, although some of what I hear is that he has processed the footage heavily (to make it look more like video)..but this may give you some idea.

I have projected footage with a digital projector on a screen up to 15 feet across, and viewing it from a normal distance (about 30 ft) it looked great.

Here's a link to a music video I shot on the xl1s..it is at half size, but I think it show you what the camera is capable of (for best results, download the file rather than viewing it on the page--it will play at a larger size when downloaded.) You'll need to be on a broadband connection to view it.

You may want to also look at the Canon Gl2...which appears to have a slight edge over the xl1s relative to resolution.

hey thanks for the comments - thats awesome that full frontal was filmed with an xl1s... I've seen some trailers for that movie - looks interesting. I now realize what you mean about the online compression... But thanks for your comment on when you projected the video.

I don't know what I'm talking about, but that new movie with Sigourney Weaver, "Tadpole" was shot digitally (no idea what camera, though) as was Bamboozled from a few years back (also no idea what camera. You know what? Don't even bother to read this -- just skip to the next post.)

Sorry that this is redundant for regular readers, but I have raved about the time I got to see a short I shot on a 30 foot screen. It was a state-of-the-art system (screening room at Sony) replete with top-end line quadruplers and God knows what, but the image was literally as good as if it was being viewed on a nice looking monitor. The most enjoyable thing about seeing your work projected to that size with an audience is that there is a whole different feel to that kind of presentation (think about seeing a movie theatrically, then renting the video and being less impressed on the small screen).

And this was footage shot in Frame Movie mode, with its inherent softness, but yet the image was plenty sharp, in my opinion.

what was your camera? xl1s?

Let's not forget we can raise the sharpness in the custom presets.

I don't know what your idea of professional is but maybe these links can give you an idea of what you're looking for. Remember though, this is compressed video for streaming purposes but is still remarkably clear with a high speed connection. Enjoy.

The footage from the concert series was shot with four XL's and the mix was fed to a 20'x25' jumbo screen and it looked just fine with the XL's 525 lines. Let me know what you think.
