Well bravo to Canon for the new XL-2, but there seem to be some conflicting specs floating around. The CCD's are reported as having 680,000 pixels with something like 462,000 used in 16:9 mode.

It looks nice, and I'll be very interested to see some example frames. But it seems that we PDX-10 owners still have the bragging rights in the 3CCD pixel department, with about 750,000 for 16:9 and 664,000 for 4:3. :-)

And of course you can buy a PDX-10 today... in fact you should be able to buy almost 3 of them for the price of an XL-2. But of course there will be plenty of other compelling reasons to go for the XL-2, like larger chips, progressive scan, 24p and interchangeable lenses...

That Sony prototype HDV camera still looks mighty impressive, with its stock manual focus and zoom rings. Hope they can deliver on this next year...

Actually this is the one thing that surprises me, that they made it look nearly identical to the XL-1. I guess they figured "if it ain't broke"...

But the silver and red look has been criticized by Canon loyalists on many occasions, so I'm surprised they didn't opt for a black body. But then, I never can understand the Japanese when it comes to these design issues....

rather a HDV power drill than a DV hedge trimmer...

I honestly feel that the Sony HDV is not too far away - its like watching a grand master play chess knowing that the only outcome is checkm8 - the 3 megapixel 1/3 " chips are already rolling off the production line

We here at the shop just saw this on their website about 2 days ago, and we're Canon dealers...

I have only been in broadcast and post equipment sales for about 2 years now but one thing I have been saying since Panasonic introduced us to the AG-DVX100 is that if Canon would re-tool the XL1 and just add 24p, they could sell a million more of the same camera. It would be nice if they would add XLRs. Well, they did both and I am thinking it will be THE big thing. Bigger than the 100A in the mid level post and productions as well as film schools. Interchangable prime lenses baby, not to mention a higher advertised pixel count.

You should realize, they probably saved a TON of cash by not redesigning the body completly. Except for the placement of the XLR connectors, it seems (from the images we have here) to be the same case. A good way to help keep the costs down that we can hopefully pass on to the consumers.

We haven't been given pricing information yet so we are still in the dark too. More later if I find out anything new.

Sean, these are all good points about what appears to be a terrific camcorder. However we're starting to drift pretty far from this forum's topic (and I'll take the blame for starting it all ;-)
