I know some of you have been waiting a while for the new Vegas book, me included. However, today I approved everything from the DVD, which is the last thing to be approved, go thru legal, etc, etc, etc.

I'm thrilled to say it's gonna be here really quick now. Legal and Layout are where this stuff gets screwed up.
To make up for the wait, the DVD contains:
Nearly 1000 ACID loops
Over 50 video files
Over 50 stock stills
Over 50 different demo software (and some free) software files
Gruntload of V5/XP themes
A dozen motion backgrounds for DVDA or other uses
Over 100 veg files, some related to projects in the book, others that are just fun.
25 additional tutorials that couldn't be printed in the book due to paper weight/shipping costs. (roughly 200 pages extra)
2 bonus chapters

And more... :-) I don't want to give it all away just yet.
I felt terrible, even though it's out of my control, that the book was delayed, hence the extra, extra effort on the DVD contents to make up for it. The ACID loops alone are worth twice the cost of the book.
Special thanks to Cheno and Mitch Richardson for helping me get the book done and out by early June. The book also contains a couple really sexy veg files from Mike Chenoweth, one of them is 50 layers deep.

Thanks to you guys for your patience.

Coming out at about the same time, is the "Instant Vegas 5" book from Jeffrey Fisher and myself. Watch here on the DVInfo.net and your email boxes for announcements on that one.

Finally, we've also got "Instant Boris FX" from Chris Vadnais, which is a great intro to intermediate book on using Boris tools for Vegas and otherwise.

See the http://www.vasst.com/printproducts/bookmenu.htm page if you'd like more info.

Glenn,
Sorry, i don't check in here as often as the other forums.
We held this at the request of a manufacturer/distributor.
you'll get some nice goodies when it releases. It's shot, and was edited, but we'd included some things that couldn't pass legal department of a manufacturer.
We hope to have this ready to go in 10 days or less, just waiting on lawyers.
Wish we could just shoot, say what we want, and do what we want, but when you show/use other people's stuff...gotta keep it clean.

Hey that's cool. I'm just looking to help build my achillies heel (sp?)...aka AUDIO. Mabye I should look into the Sound Forge training DVD also. I bought the program but only use it to run my Noise Reduction filter which can be used in Vegas...go figure.

Look.... I have a friend who's a musician. Very talented- two Carnegy Hall appearances. He composed and recorded all the tracks for a documentary I shot a few years back. I also used one of his pieces in a Diamond Store commercial I shot.

Well he's looking to release a solo album but has a little difficulty with the mastering...or "final output" if you will. Some of his instrumental tracks need to be tweaked and optimized. He's primarily a pianist but has a small in-home studio which he creates music digitally. As I said I'm an audio newb, but he has a rack that's connected to his soundcard that has all sort of sample instruments, etc. I really don't understand much of it. Anyway he's been trying to use Sound Forge to help polish his tracks. Is this the right tool for him?

I told him about you and Vasst- even linked him to some of your musical works at amazon. I'd love for you to hear one of his peices and maybe tell him what it needs. Granted I know your on an incredibly tight schedule but I spoke to him today and the first person I thought of was you. Should I email you?

Geez, 1000 Acid Loops! That's a keeper. Can't wait to take a look at the other goodies.

Now THERE is a comment I gotta laugh at. At exactly the same time you posted this post, someone on the Sony forum chewed me out for the imbalance of 1000 loops vs having more video, etc on the DVD. :-) Can't please everyone, I guess.

I went to the doctor, and after numerous tests, he told me I'm just plain lazy.

I asked him for the medical term so I could tell my wife! :)

Seriously though, where (and when) can we order this DVD?

Andy, the BOOK DVD has 1000 loops among a buncha other stuff on it....
But there are several training DVDs including 3 for Vegas on the http://www.vasst.com site. We've got 3 new DVDs launching this week, plus 3 new books:
Vegas
Instant Vegas
Instant Boris FX

Plus next week we're launching the second edition of our popular Basics of DV book.

Just a reminder...there is a community discount for folks that are members of the DVinfo.net site. Just type COMM into the discount code box on the order page.

Just a quick question.

Do you cover 5.1 mixing in the book? Or do you know any references on 5.1 mixing in Vegas?

Well two quick questions.

Kind regards

Douglas, I take it that the new book with all the loops and goodies you've talked about is the one called "Vegas"?

Cheers

The new book covers Vegas 5 pretty thoroughly, yes. 5.1 surround is in the book, and much more.
There are 2 books releasing soon on Vegas 5. First book is

"Vegas 5 Editing Workshop" which is from the CMP DV Experts series. 464 pages of printed matter, plus an additional nearly 200 pages in DVD tutorial content. Retail cost 49.99 street price around 38.00

Then there is the "Instant Vegas 5" book from the VASST series. We have our own book series distributed by CMP Books as well. They are smaller books, lower cost, no CD or DVD included. Retail price 24.99 street price around 19.00

The picture of that Vegas 5 book is out on Amazon and looks
like the one from your site but it says it was published 8/03?

The price is $33.97 Is this it?

Douglas Spotted Eagle
September 7th, 2004, 09:54 AM
that would be the one. Scheduled for release on 8/15, but not really released until 9/15.

Michael Best

Here is the Walmart link http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2623370

Amazon link http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1578202574/qid=1094574732/sr=8-2/ref=pd_ka_2/103-3095231-7941400?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Then there is the "INSTANT VEGAS 5" book, which is a different book.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1578202604/qid=1094574732/sr=8-3/ref=pd_ka_3/103-3095231-7941400?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2622061

Instant is a small book. Vegas 5 Editing Workshop is a big book.
it's also a second edition, with probably 50% written content from the first edition. First edition didn't have a DVD, and of course, was on Vegas 4. Orange book cover is Vegas 5, blue book cover is Vegas 4.

Douglas, clicking "buy now" goes to Amazon and not the VASST shop, so I can't enter the DVINFO code, will that be coming later?

Aaron

Douglas Spotted Eagle
September 7th, 2004, 03:13 PM
Unfortunately, only DVDs and live training, not books, can enjoy the DVinfo.net code. We couldn't get the publishers to go along with that since there is such a small margin in books. We pay almost the same price for the books as the Walmart cost! :-(
Sorry!

Yeah, I just got one too. It started shipping last Friday, so I'm not sure what that's all about. I've got the publisher checking into it. Sorry for the hassle. I just write it, they publish and ship it.
Frustrating every time, and this is book #9. Tech books are always slow, but boy the waiting gets hard!

I just received the VASST E-mail indicating Vegas 5 is now shipping, but when I click on the link, (to Walmart) it indicates the book is due to arrive December 28th!

I pre-ordered from Amazon in May (Amazon still tells me the item may arrive in June 04) so my question is:

Is it really shipping now, or only if ordered direct fom VASST?

If its now available, I need to cancel my Amazon order.

Any update?

Thanks,

Brian

Douglas Spotted Eagle

Amazon should have received it in their warehouse on Monday or Tuesday. My copy just arrived today from the printer, and mine went after all the warehouse copies went. (I have to wait just like everyone else after it's gone to the copy/layout/print program)
But it's real, it's here, I've got one! VASST doesn't sell the books. Wish we could/did, but there isn't enough in the books to warrant selling them ourselves.

Douglas Spotted Eagle
September 28th, 2004, 12:27 PM
Wish I knew what to tell you....it's out there. We're getting letters about the book...Maybe Walmart just hasn't changed their date? I've only got one copy here, or I'd offer to ship you mine. We get our stocking copies after everyone else has fulfilled orders.

Michael Best

Amazon does not indicate a delay (of course neither did Wal-mart)
I wonder if that's a better option. Regardless, thanks for the update.

Brian Mitchell Warshawsky

Here is the story from Amazon....

The site will not directly tell you this when you pull information on the book, but as I pre-ordered in May, they finally updated my "tracking Information" in response to my e-mail query.

Their e-mailed response was that the book is now on "back order" which may even indicate they actually filled some orders, just not mine.

The new estimated shipping date (without further assurance) is the end of October, with an anticipated delivery /received date of......November 2nd.

At any rate, editing of my full length feature project (preview coming soon) should be in full swing by the time V5 EW by DSE arrives.

At the recent Sony Showcase / VASST program in Chicago, I seem to recall Spot stating "give that man a cigar" in response to learning what I was doing without prior experience. Now if that cigar were to arrive along with the V5 editing workshop, that would really be something to light up about!

Can anyone tell me if the loops and additional media on the DVD are royalty free?

Aaron

Douglas Spotted Eagle
September 28th, 2004, 03:02 PM
Anything that doesn't have a bug on the video is usable. All loops are royalty free, backgrounds, photos, etc are nearly all royalty free. There are only some video files that may be used outside of the training world.

I preordered my copy from amazon in May and the preorder seemed stalled, so I emailed them last week. The responded on Friday that the book was backordered with no information on availability, but they were upgrading my shipping and I could expect to receive it on Oct 6th. Huh? Anyway, they sent me a tracking number and it's due to arrive tomorrow.

Brian Mitchell Warshawsky

Barry,

Your situation mirrors mine. Amazon may subscribe to the "squeeky wheel gets the grease" approach to allocating a limited number of items.

Unless its just a case of coincidence.

If only Spot could convince Amazon that he knows the author, his copy would arrive soon.

Brian

Just made my first read through.

Great, Great stuff! Worth every last penny! There is a ton of info and the writing doesn't get too techy or pedantic.

Great job Spot!

I have picked up on just a couple of formatting errors/typos, should these be relayed to you or should I just keep my pie hole shut because how many books have I written :-)

Douglas Spotted Eagle
October 22nd, 2004, 11:02 AM
Reid, you're welcome to email the typos but we weren't the ones to proof this book. Was proofed by a company hired by CMP. And the book is already printed....so it's not likely to change.

I HAVE compiled a list of the errors I've found, and will post them to the errata site next week. Still have 2 chapters to vet.
Originally, I wasn't scheduled to do the entire VASST-Vegas tour we did, but circumstances left me no choice. As a result, we allowed the publisher to hire an outside proofing person who is a Vegas user.
Bad move on my part. I probably should have left the VASST tour and proofed the book. :-|

At this time this book is everywhere.

Amazon proper has it as do independent retailers who chose to sell from within Amazon.

Your local bookstore may even have it.

Yeah mine has shipped and is on it's way from Amazon - along with season 5 of Stargate SG1 ;)

I wonder if it's a CMP thing with the spelling mistakes? The 3 CMP books I have, John Jackman's lighting book, and Jay Rose's audio ones have quite a few mistakes in them.

It's a shame cause you buy a pro book and expect the spelling to be right and words not to be doubled up "the the" or left out. No slant on the authors (Unless they did the proofing ;) ), the proofers should pick these things up. Nevertheless the books I have are very excellent so it's only a minor thing!

i've always wondered... is this douglas spotted eagle the same as the musician?

anyway regarding the book, where should i buy it to optimally benefit DSG? i typically shop@amazon for books. does the DVD automatically come with the book? what's the diff between DSG's Vegas5 book and instant Vegas5?

Yes, I'm the same guy.
Buying from Walmart, Amazon, or any other store is of the same benefit to me...

Douglas Spotted Eagle
October 26th, 2004, 06:44 PM
I've recorded most of my later works in one version of Vegas or another. I was also brought in by Sonic Foundry as a video consultant and tradeshow pony during the development of Vegas.
Film contributions like Last Samurai, Hidalgo, Blackhawk down, etc, were all created in Vegas.
Same with some of my older works like ConAir, Last of the Mohicans, etc. (Vegas Pro, not Vegas as we know it today)
Lotsa Vegas stuff in my past. I don't know if that made me a guru or not, but I love the app.
