View Full Version : Different question about a mic for PD170

This may be silly:

Is there a way to remove the XLR box and large mic from the PD170 and use some sort of really small mic instead. For times when I want to run around at amusement parks, travelling, hiking, etc I don't know if I want that large mic hanging on the front. I though of maybe mounting a small inexpensive shotgun in lieu of the XLR box for this times? Is that possible? Is there a 3.5mm mic jack on it? Is there a shoe into which I could mount a small mic?

Of course other times in a more controlled physical I would use the XLR and standard mic and take advantage of its quality.

Thanks again my friends.

No to all the questions, Hank.

The microphone that comes with the 170 can be considered inexpensive if not so small.

I suppose you could get yourself a lavaliere and shorten (or just coil up) the cord. Use a right-angle XLR connector to reduce the connector footprint.

Lavs can be every bit as sensitive as any other microphone. You can unscrew the factory mount to get it out of the way. But you would have to substitute a small shock mount for the lav.

Maybe you should have got a VX2100 instead?
You really can't make use of the XLR inputs and a shotgun for running around amusement parks, etc.?

The beauty of the VX is just that: At weddings I can simply pull out the little 1/8" stereo plug that connects up my Beachtek to the external mic socket, and I'm instantly filming using the stereo onboard mics. So good for audience babble, laughter and applause, which instantly sound better in stereo. For the wedding ceremony and speeches of course I use XLR shotguns into the Beechtek, so I have the best of both worlds.

I really think the PDX10 and the DVX100A have the 170 beat over this - having inbuilt mics always with you is indeed a very useful facility.

wondering why you opted for the 170?

I did not, I bought a VX. I was trying to decide between the two and asked about the mic. Why was I thinking of the PD170? Because I like its darker grey finish better. I'm not joking.

Thanks

Ahh yes. BUT, methinks this be no more than a mere workaround, eh?
