View Full Version : Anyone share V5 "effects packages"?
Glen Elliott November 3rd, 2004, 12:58 PM I ask because I see forums that share VEG files. I have a few effects I created who's results I'm quite happy with and find myself going back to use them on several projects. I felt something like this might be of interest to share.
I've even taken some time to re-create some effects in the Magic Bullet palette to an uncanny resemblance. Benefit is much MUCH less render time yet it yeilds the same visual effect.
Graham Bernard November 3rd, 2004, 01:06 PM Glen . . I'm a bit confused with what you are exactly offering? Veggies are indeed shared . . you know the sites?
Grazie
Glen Elliott November 3rd, 2004, 01:27 PM I know there are places that share Veggies but what about the actuall effects package? Or is the VEG file the format in which people choose to share effects as well. Then the user could go in there and define the effect as an effects package?
Edward Troxel November 3rd, 2004, 01:32 PM Effects of that nature are often shared via VEG files as well. If you've created a "package" consisting of multiple effects/presets, you would have to give precise instructions to re-create them.
You might look at the Preset Manager and see if it will export them. Those files could then be imported by someone else.
Graham Bernard November 3rd, 2004, 03:53 PM I've yet to see anything other than Audio Presets appearing in Preset Manager - I'd like to see how this is achieved?

That's exactly what I was talking about- there has to be a file that I can export that others can simply drop them in the effects packages folder and navigate to from within Vegas.
Similar to how you can with custom actions in Photoshop.
Here- let me go snoop around in the Vegas Directory and see what I can find.
UPDATE:
Check out.... Sony> Vegas 5.0> FX Packages
In there you'll see whatever FX packages you saved. Oddly enough they reside in folders with really long names in brackets (example: "{EB1CF-245Y-TUEV3-.....}")
The one I use all the time that I created actually has two files in the directory- both the same name...one with the extension of ".sfg" and the other ".sfv" Any ideas?
Graham Bernard November 3rd, 2004, 04:27 PM Glen, go snoop around Preset Manager too! We should call you Sherlock - G
Glen Elliott November 3rd, 2004, 04:38 PM Well maybe the "Vegas Oracle" Trox might fill us in on what "sfg" and "sfv" files are?!
Edward Troxel November 3rd, 2004, 09:39 PM The biggest problem with trying to do everything manually is that there are often registry keys that must also be transferred.
I don't have the preset manager installed. I HAVE heard about problems with it seeing everything (from Grazie AND Others). I'm wondering if it has problems seeing Vegas 4 presets but can see Vegas 5 presets OK??? Guess I really need to install it and check it out!
Given your knowledge of what presets are on your system, YOU should be able to cross reference them to the file extensions???
Maybe... sfg "G"enerated Media Preset? sfv "V"ideo FX preset?
Graham Bernard November 4th, 2004, 12:45 AM . . and why, Glen and Edward, is this so darn difficult? Audio Presets ARE in Preset Manager . . where's the Video stuff too?
Grazie
Glen Elliott November 4th, 2004, 10:44 AM I'm feeling out of the loop- what is the "preset manager"?
A separate install? Huh? I was just looking at the Vegas directories from within windows explorer.
Graham Bernard November 4th, 2004, 10:53 AM "I'm feeling out of the loop" . . not any more .. . middle of the Utilities List . . nice list . . hmmm yum yum . .

Graham Bernard November 4th, 2004, 10:55 AM Hah ! Beat yah Edward!
Glen Elliott November 4th, 2004, 10:58 AM Thank you...both.
Hmmm doesn't seem to have any "info" about it. Takes you right to the download. Either of you care to fill me in?
Graham Bernard November 4th, 2004, 11:36 AM "Either of you care to fill me in?" . . Ah Glen . . it's too late for me . . Edward might oblige with the filling-in . . HAHAH LOL ! As I said Preset Manager for me works with Audio . .I've yet to be able to Transport my Video FXs . .yeah?

Edward Troxel November 4th, 2004, 11:37 AM <<<-- Originally posted by Graham Bernard : Hah ! Beat yah Edward! -->>>
Must have finished a few seconds before me :-)
Glen, you'll just need to install it and test it out.
Brian Mitchell Warshawsky November 7th, 2004, 01:30 AM I found the Preset Mgr works like a charm.
Glen,
Have you found a site to upload your pre-sets for sharing?
Brian
Graham Bernard November 7th, 2004, 01:55 AM Brian, isn't this ONLY for Audio? Is it for Video too? I can get the Audio Presets appearing but not the Video?
Grazie
Brian Mitchell Warshawsky November 7th, 2004, 08:10 PM Grazie,
I just downloaded the PM after learning of it in this thread, but the first thing which popped up on mine, were Filmy's presets from Edward's 24fps script, so it looks like it should work for any pre-sets.
Brian
Graham Bernard November 8th, 2004, 01:17 AM Thanks Brian . . I really don't understand now . .
G
Graham Bernard November 8th, 2004, 01:19 AM Where are you seeing them? Can you see the NEW ones that you've created too? - G
Edward Troxel November 8th, 2004, 08:46 AM Grazie, I just installed it here on a test machine. I only saw some audio entries. I then added a preset to the text generated media. That did NOT show up. I then added three effects and saved them as an effects "Chain". That effects chain DID show up.
Graham Bernard November 8th, 2004, 09:27 AM Ah HAH ! We seem to be getting somewhere. An effects chain WILL show in Video . . and not a single Video FX . . . BUT a SINGLE EFFECT in AUDIO will show, I don't have to make a "chain" . . . Have we got an invertebrate here Edward? . . If this is the case I can't understand why this hasn't been picked up before. As you know, Edward, I tend to follow the LAST order . .
Are we getting somewhere?
Grazie
Edward Troxel November 8th, 2004, 10:27 AM Open up the effect. Click to add a NEW effect. In the box that opens, click on Save As and give it a name for the chain.
Graham Bernard November 8th, 2004, 11:16 AM Thanks Edward - I guess you know I'm up to my neck in "stuff" . . I'm gonna catch this puppy, probably tomorrow now .. .
Thank you all so much ! - Grazie
Brian Mitchell Warshawsky November 9th, 2004, 08:51 PM Now if we can find a site to upload and share effects chains, we'll be all set :-)
Brian
Edward Troxel November 9th, 2004, 09:44 PM I'd offer to host but I'm not sure I could handle the bandwidth necessary.
Graham Bernard November 10th, 2004, 04:44 PM Okay - Thanks Edward and Brian and Glen, for making me pursue it. AND yes, I need to create a "Chain"; name it as a chain; THEN it will appear in Preset Manager ready to be "Copied" to my own PM file . .
Grazie
Brian Mitchell Warshawsky November 11th, 2004, 12:31 PM >>>>>>I'd offer to host but I'm not sure I could handle the bandwidth necessary.
There may be a simple alternative:
Most of the chains and settings within each effect may simply be described textually and freely shared for anyone to duplicate on their own.
For example, Zenote Glow 1/4 Tiffen plus 60% Sepia = [Generic Effect - Film Look], etc.
If members like Glen have favourite effects settings which allow Vegas to emulate famous "looks", maybe a single thread can be devoted to postings of the descriptive settings.
Rob Lohman previously posted similar discriptions for his Lady X settings, and a permanent thread devoted to this subject might be invaluable.
Brian
Graham Bernard November 11th, 2004, 01:54 PM hmmm . . could we be on the edge of something like a "choreography of editing" or a form of shorthand . . . and the codification of FXs .. this has always intrigued me as a possibility. I like the idea of the whole-ness of a piece . . the place a video/film takes up and the overall effect of a piece as it journeys through .. yes? I once saw a musicians "sketch" Stravinsky had done for the Rites of Spring, spell binding . . some the more modern classic musicians utilize some extravagant graphic means . . .
. . for me this is becoming one of the most important and creative threads for a long time . . . thanks to you all!
Grazie
Andre Andreev November 12th, 2004, 04:29 PM Ed, I can donate a mirror with 1GB/month for 3 months.
Or, I can create a page which will list the Glenn's files with credit/license info on one of my websites (most likely instantclassic.org).
Glenn, I am very interested in your presets as I find the rendering times introduced by using Magic Bullet mindboggling.
Would you consider sharing them, even in the imperfect "shorthand" version suggested by Brian W?
Maybe someone will be able to take the "shorthand" and turn it into an easy to install, "packaged" version.
Let us know.
Regards
-- Andre
Brian Mitchell Warshawsky November 12th, 2004, 04:51 PM Dude,
You rock!
Brian
Edward Troxel November 12th, 2004, 09:06 PM I can create a new category on my site if everyone wishes. Then entries could be made that simply point to the files - wherever they may be located on the web.
Graham Bernard November 13th, 2004, 12:59 AM Andre - good man! Edward thanks too! . . .I'm off there now to see if Glenn has "deposited" anything there yet? . . .
Sharing veggies is a real neat way of doing this stuff. Having the FX embbeded into a veg, even without the media coming along with it, so all I need to do is "replace" with my own media, will give me an indication. And yes a simple "Copy" text into a notepad itsy bitsy Notepad file can also do it.
Other places to deposit are, Chienworks & SPOT's VASST site. There are probably others .. Vegas is starting to spread . . yeah?
Grazie
Andre Andreev November 19th, 2004, 04:01 PM Then I'll figure out a way to either provide ftp access to a folder on my server, or, more likely, receive files in my email and upload them.
Edward Troxel November 19th, 2004, 05:28 PM Andre, send me an e-mail and we'll figure out what needs to be done.
Graham Bernard November 20th, 2004, 12:34 AM Superb Edward! . . Well done . . I await its release . .
Grazie
Brian Mitchell Warshawsky November 20th, 2004, 02:17 AM All we need now is the "content".
Glen or Simon, care to make the initial deposit?
Brian
Edward Troxel November 20th, 2004, 06:26 AM Ok, I've added a "shared effects" section. You can post links to chains saved with the preset manager OR simply list the settings changed to create an effect. As Brian said, now we need someone to "make the initial deposit".
Graham Bernard November 20th, 2004, 07:45 AM On the case Edward . . about to upload .. ! Alot od Audio and 2 Video thingys . .. Video is a CC thing ..
Grazie
Graham Bernard November 20th, 2004, 07:52 AM Er . .Edward, how do I "send" a preset package to your site .. ?
G
Edward Troxel November 20th, 2004, 12:52 PM At this point in time, the only mechinism in place is to post a LINK to the file. You have to place the file somewhere on the web and then give the proper link.
Brian Mitchell Warshawsky November 28th, 2004, 10:26 PM Edward,
I am preparing some presets for posting (via email to Andre) but I note the file sizes appear very small - like 5k.
If the files remain below a certain size threshold, would there be a way to post them on the JetDV site?

Andre,
I just discovered that your profile bars dvinfo members from viewing your email address.
Brian
Edward Troxel November 29th, 2004, 06:54 AM Brian, at this point in time my site has no automatic upload mechanism. I would consider manually uploading files e-mailed to me and returning a proper link to those files for your posting. I would have to also see how much this affects my available bandwidth. So just e-mail them to me for now.
Douglas Spotted Eagle November 30th, 2004, 08:46 PM Guys, you can already share these on the VASST auto-mechanism if you'd like.
Edward Troxel November 30th, 2004, 09:16 PM Spot, how about a new category for those files?
Douglas Spotted Eagle November 30th, 2004, 10:08 PM There's a thought...I'll add a drop down to the page, and then I'll have Jason collate the shared chains into that new category. I'll try to get it done tonight. DV Expo is keeping us up late at night. :-)
Graham Bernard December 1st, 2004, 12:40 AM Neat! - Grazie
