You have tried in what way? I know of a lot of people doing that
without any problems. I myself have done it lots of times with an
XL1S.

A lot of people seem really fond of a program called "DV Rack"
that allows you to monitor and record the signal:

DV Rack is really slick. I think it's a great program for the price.

DV Rack is superb, especially with the $200 rebate being offered right now.

Thanks Fellas for the advice, I guess I need a good program, Do I need a special video card or anything?

If you're using DV Rack, you need nothing else other than a firewire port.

(make sure your laptop fits the minimum specifications of course).
