I'm trying to extract a .VOB file into a mpeg2 file, so I can put it in premiere and make a master copy on a miniDV tape.

I've tryed simply renaming the vob file to .mpeg or .m2v, but it gives me audio distortion when I do that. What program could I use or do to beable to extract it to a mpeg2 file without the audio distortion?

Also, when I render my files in premiere to be exported on a miniDV the image on the dv tape is jittery, like the image is overlapping it's self. Anybody know how to solve that? Any help appreciated!

Its because of the copy protection of DVDs. Its not meant to be copied.

However I suppose you are allowed to do it if its your own footage.

As you found out the file is already MPEG-2. However, it is an
MPEG-2 transport/program stream which most programs do not
know how to handle.

The audio can be in PCM, AC3 (Dolby Digital) or in MPEG audio.

As you found out some programs like (Premiere) might not work
with this. What you need to do is de-mux the files into their
elementery streams or convert the file.

What you might try is get www.virtualdub.org and see
if it can load the file. Then save it out as an uncompressed AVI.

If that doesn't work you need a tool like bbTools:

www.doom9.net, go to download and then vob tools.
You see bbTools there.

Do you know in what format the audio stream is? If it is in AC3
(Dolby Digital) you need to decode it first. Look for a program
called BeSweet.

I just went to www.mainconcept.com and bought the MPEG Pro editor plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro and was able to import VOB files into the Premiere timeline and edit AND export to minidv tape.

Don't you get some video artifacting when you do that?

Well, I only use it so that I have usable source to further compress.

I do usually have to deinterlace which is a pretty big change from any 'original' you have.

This may be of no help to you, but I just finished an ad where the footage I needed was supplied on DVD. All I had to do was change the VOB file extension to MPG -- then I imported the file into Windows Movie Maker and exported it as a DV AVI file (finally found a use for Windows Movie Maker!). The DV AVI file was then imported into Premiere for editing.

Trying to import the renamed VOB/MPG into Premiere Pro directly caused Premiere to crash. But once I converted it to AVI in WMM, it worked fine (and looked/sounded fine, as far as I can tell). I know you said that the audio sounded all wrong, but maybe putting it in WMM will help...

Hey, I'm considering doing this, but I want to make sure I won't blow my money on it. Does it work fine? It doesn't make any modifications to the VOB file right? Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm still trying to solve this one.

Btw, works great for me. Just used it this morning to rip a 37minute DVD into the Premiere timeline. No need to mess with all those other crappy little "VOB programs" like virtual dub, etc. What a waste of time.

Just import the VOB to Premiere and Voila!

Funny you mention VirualDUB. That actually isn't a VOB program
at all. It allows you to work with it with the RIGHT MPEG-2 filters
and codecs installed on your system. VirtualDUB is more a swiss
knife for digital video offering ways to convert and process
footage in all sorts of ways (including frameserving).

Whoops, how did I miss that! Well, I got it and it works! Though when I export it to mini DV and play it back on the t.v. theres areas that are slightly more pixelated/jaggy compared to the DVD.
