Will this work on the XL2?

If so would it allow the Canon hot shoe light to work without casting a shadow?

It should work but in my experience the lens itself casts quite a shadow on the subject. The light just needs to be higher with that long lens out in front of it.

Have you used the light yet Greg? I only ask as you would realize that the main lens gets in the way just as much as the microphone. As an example if you were doing a shot of a man standing 7-8 feet from camera you would see his face and shoulders illuminated and then a shadow would cut across his chest where the lens is. To his right on the wall behind him you would see a big honking shadow of the microphone. The adapter you are referring to will lift the mic up out of the way (possibly) but will do nothing about the lens still being obstructive. You can try it but it probably won't work.

yes I have the light....I am using it mainly with the 3x and havent had a problem with the lens, only the mic.

I have a Sen. MKH416 mounted in the canon holder and I get a large shadow from it.

Great. Then maybe this will help you. How much shorter is the 3x than the 20x? It seems odd that you would gain that much clearance from it but I'm glad to hear it.

ok, I just installed the MM-XL1 and it offers NO help to the poorly designed light problem, actually makes it worse.

Reverse it so that it's mounted behind the mic clamp instead of in front. Or... is that the way you had it?

Unfortunatly, it wont fit that way. I am using a Sen MKH416 with a Rycote wind sock and the existing Canon clamp is in the way and wont allow the reverse setup (the Rycote is in the way- If I use the mic only it would fit).

I don't know if you remember me, but I shot a story about Digital FX for a class project about leadership for Southeastern. Anyways, they make an adaptor that fits in the mic shoe of the XL2 that has the threading to accept any shock mount. You can twist it around away from the lense to get it out of the way of the light. Hope this helps. Here's the pics...
