OK I have found the effect I am desperately looking for. It was used in the titles of the brilliant film "Oldboy".

Anyone know what plugin this could be? Or is it no plugin and just a great made up from scratch effect?

I have surfed through a ton of plugin sites and found some great plugins which I will hopefully be buying soon (Nattress, CGM, Digital Anarchy, would like Genarts but too expensive)
