Can you burn a DVD short on a CDR disk? Does it require a DVD burner or can it be done on a CD burner?

If you burn it on a CD, I don't think it makes it a DVD any more. :)

I think what your asking is can you burn a file with DVD encoding onto a CD and have it still play in a DVD player?

However, you may be better off encoding it in a video CD format that most DVD players recognize and burning to CD that way.

It's done with a CD burner. It is a DVD format file (MPEG 2) that is burned to a CD. They are usually referred to as Super VCD. Your still limited in size to the size of the CD and your files (35 to 60 minutes). Picture quality is comparable to DVD (same format, files etc.) Compatability is a problem. Not all home DVD players will play them. Most computers have no problem.

VCD is MPEG 1 format and is near VHS quality. It will hold 80 minutes on a 700mb disc. Compatability is improved over SVCD. Compatability is improving with new players and as older players are replaced.

Yeah, that's kind of what I am asking. I have a number of shorts that would probably fit on a CD, but I am looking for that DVD (MPEG-2) quality. If I could put anywhere from 5-15 minutes worth, that would be fine and probably save a lot of bucks by not using either DVD-R (or is +) media and burner.

DVD kind of reminds me of frame vs interlace discussions...its very hard to get an absolute answer. (No reflection on you guys!!!)

You can get up to 18 minutes of DVD quality Mpeg2 onto a CD, author as normal DVD and just burn to CD, if you Set Top plays DVDs/CDs the chances are it will play.

Using Cleaner on a Mac I've been able to get about 30 minutes onto a SVCD. It think it depends if you use Variable Bit Rate for the encoding to MPEG 2. I've seen reference to 60 minutes but I can't vouch for the quality.

One note of caution. Many DVD set top players only play VCDs and not SVCDs. Also If you burn a DVD format to a CDR most DVD players will not read it or treat it like a DVD. Many DVD Set Top players recognize the media installed and adjust accordingly, so since they do not expect DVD material on a CDR they will give a DISK ERROR. I know several manufacturers do it this way, specificially Toshiba.
