Apple today announced a new upgraded (speed bumped, not redesigned) line of iMac computers. Changes from previous models include:
- 1.8 Ghz and 2.0 Ghz processors (previously 1.6 and 1.8)
- 512Mb Ram (previously 256Mb)
- Built-in Wireless Airport Extreme and Bluetooth (previously $99 option)
- 128Mb ATI Radeon 9600 video (previously 64Mb NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra)
- 160Mb and 250Mb hard drives (previously 80Mb and 160Mb)
- 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet (previously 10/100)
- 8X Dual-Layer SuperDrive DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW (previously SuperDrive DVD-R/CD-RW)
- Pre-loaded with Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" and iLife '05
- Top-end 20" model now $100 less
This is what I've been waiting for. Heck, mostly I was waiting for a better video card; the other things like the DL DVD+R are just a bonus! And at $100 bucks cheaper for the 20" model (what I was planning on buying) coupled with the included AirPort Extreme Wireless make this a heckuva upgrade.
If I wasn't going out-of-town on a shoot, I'd buy it this coming weekend. I guess I'll go pick one up next week instead. It should fit my needs fine (Standard DV editing with FCE), and be a big upgrade over my old G4 DP450.
