View Full Version : Sony's Cell Workstation [16 TeraFlops!!!]

I know this may be old news to some, but in any event this is still exciting news.

Sony (with IBM) plan on using their Cell technology (as used in Playstation 3) for use in a Workstation (PC).

The market Sony indents to target is "content creation" i.e film makers, games makers etc..

If they (Sony and IBM) can produce the power they are claiming (16 teraflops!!!) then at least in theory this could be the only box you need to do everything (from HD uncompressed editing to, SFX, CGI, etc...)

The Sony guy Katagari that in charge of Playstation repetedly said Intel, when asked who they see as competition. No one believed. Maybe he is right.

Actually, including the Cell processor, the PowerPC-based CPU, and the inVidia-based GPU, the theoretical maximum FP rating of the system is 2 TFLOPs.
