Hey I know this is a wedding forum and that what I usually shoot however ive been asked to film a soccer game. Has anyone got any tips about filming sports events. It will be a two camera shoot with two camera operators. Should I keep one camera locked down? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I've personally never filmed a soccer game, but the way that I've been doing sporting events would be to have one of you capture a wide shot. Something like what you would see on tv the majority of the time. About 25-30 yards wide, always following the ball. The second cam should be focused on action only. Look for the close up of players with the ball, players defending aggressively, coach and bench close ups, and even the crowd if you get that angle. Keepers are always interesting to watch as well.

With the standard shot, you always have something to go back to if your tight shot isn't what you like. I've filmed a dance recital for two years, and this is the method that I've found to work the best.

I'd have to agree with Matt, use one fixed camera at centerfield as high as possible and 'follow the action'. Use the second camera at field level for close up action, MCU of coaches, etc. Do not place the field cam on the opposite side of the field for any action on the field, it won't mix well. Do work both ends of the field.

It does depend who and what you are taping it for. If its for the coach, he has different needs than if its for the local TV station or for a student trying to get an athletic scholoarship.

Split the difference and go with a monopod - tradeoff between stability and portability.

When filming a football game you have to go JVC PRO HD. With that big shoulder mounted camera you look like the professional they just hired from the television station. And with that big interchangable lens people will be looking for your broadcasting truck. What kind of camera do the big boys use ? Have you ever seen a football game on television that was filmed using handheld cameras ? Its all about looking the part. Sure a big shoulder mounted camera may be overkill for a high school football game but remember when they see you with that big HD Cam soon people will be knocking down your doors for the college football games and maybe even the pro games. And with JVC Pro HD you get a camera that looks like a $50,000 camera but you pay only $5,400.
