What is an inexpensive case that can be used to transport a boom stand or more than one boom stand around town that will fit a 46" long boom stand (when closed - specifically the On-Stage SB9600 and the Manfrotto 420b)?

Thanks,
Michael

inexpensive makes it tricky. You can get On-Stage mike stand cases from such places as Musiciansfriend.com and americanmusical.com. The Manfrotto, harder; try bhphotovideo and search tripod cases, they have a number by various manufacturers, but not what I would call cheap, ymmv. /Battle Vaughan

I found this one: Kata | LS-54 Light Stand Bag | KT LS-54 | B&H Photo Video (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/652309-REG/Kata_KT_LS_54_LS_54_Light_Stand_Bag.html) .. it seems nice.. will fit 4 up to 54" ...

for an unpadded case that will accomodate a few stands, check out the golf guard travel case for a golf bag on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Golf-Guard-Standard-Case/dp/B001D2AITW/), or at your local sporting goods store.

You can put everything you mention in it, as well as your tripod soft case, and a few lights.

A friend uses this as his travel tripod case - works well.

I'll second Seth's suggestion.

I got a golf case from Sports Authority for $100 and it's been working fine for a few years now... But the handle did break off, which I repaired with fiberglass and epoxy. And a small hole got punched into the bottom which I also fixed with fiberglass and epoxy. All the damage was done by airline travel, which is to be expected.

Here's the case I got. They're probably available from various sources:

What do you use on the inside of that golf case to protect the stands from scratching each other?

There's nothing to keep the stands from scratching each other.

If you really wanted to keep the stands pristine you can wrap each one in a towel. For me, cosmetics is unimportant. As long as they don't get damaged and operate smoothly, I'm OK with it.
