Nvidia has announced that 3D Blu-ray movies will begin appearing in the Summer of 2010.

Ben Berraondo, Nvidia PR manager for the UK and Northern Europe, confirmed that the Blu-ray Association - to which Nvidia is a contributor - had settled on the “proper parameters [for] what constitutes a 3D Blu-ray” and claimed the first 3D Blu-ray films would hit the shelves “towards the end of Summer 2010”.

Nvidia will support the standard through its 3D Vision technology, with Berraondo noting that the new films will use bit rates of around 60Mbits/second – twice that of a standard movie.

It is a bit of marketing Hype, BD has nothing to do with 3D. You can put 3D on any media , from VHS to Blu-ray, You just need to multiplex a stereoscopic stream into a a 720p (2x30) format. I doubt That Nvidia will rewrite alone the BD specification to include new modes (1080p60 or better 1080p120 ?)

Right - it's much more about the TV/projector than the DVD/bluray.

Heck, even VCR tapes could do the old red/blue 3D...

Alternate source: PC Perspective - NVIDIA demos 3D Blu-ray running on GeForce and 3D Vision (http://www.pcper.com/comments.php?nid=8101)

Apparently, only Nvidia's GT 240 GPUs are capable of this at the moment, but besides the GT 240 for the only current GPU capable of using 3D-BD, all the new Fermi architecture GPUs will have AVC-MVC decode accelerations (which is supposedly what 3D-BD uses).

And it's not coded into the AVC video stream at 1080p120, it's still 24p, but it's two streams of it that are spliced together by software, not video compression.

Well, let's just hope this is better than the standard 3d crap I see on dvd... seeing 3d on dvd is a far cry from seeing it in the cinema. I hate that red and blue stuff.

Does anyone remember 3DTV from NAB 4 years ago?

What are you guys talking about red and blue. That tech has been gone since jaws 3d. The current 3d is on a whole other level with a tech that was started way back with MJs captain eo. You need to go see avatar.
