I have been using a desktop PC running Windows XP Home, to edit HD video. Recently I got a laptop, with Windows 7. Am I eligible to get any sort of upgrade to Vegas Pro 8 to run on Windows 7? I was told that it is possible, and legal, to have VP8 run on more than 1 machine in 1 household, provided those machines are not being used simultaneously. My dilemma is that I have 2 different operating systems. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

You don't need to do anything special, just install it on the new machine and go through the registration process. Here's what the Sony Knowledgebase says:

>>>Our licensing agreement permits you to install the software on as many machines as you own, as long as you are not running the programs at the same time. For instance, you can install the software on your home machine and on your laptop. You are not allowed to install the software on multiple machines if you are going to be using them simultaneously, such as in a home studio setting. If you are going to run the software concurrently on more than one machine, you would need to purchase a separate license for each computer.<<<

I believe the bit about running the programs at the same time does not relate to using a second pc as a network render machine although you'd need to verify that elsewhere.

Hope that's of use.

Your two different operating systems are irrelevant, unless I am missing the point. Just install Vegas 8 on both. It works fine on both OSs.
