I'm having alot of fun with the Smooth Slow Motion Record Function on this camera. I have the ability to record 3,6, or 12 sec Super High frame rate clips at FULL HD resolution. I haven't played with one this good yet. It may come in handy in a few real life situations and not just fun tests. I'll post some samples up later.

Good to hear. That was one of the features I most wanted to hear about as I contemplate purchasing this camera. Is there just one overcrank speed? So if you record the full 12 seconds, how long does the clip play when you view in slow motion?

Sony aren't too good at promoting the features of their cameras.
I heard the slow motion mode mentioned only once so I thought I'd imagined it.
It wasn't even clear for a while that the NX5 had SD slots!

From What I can see, when you record the 12 second interval on the smooth slow record, your clip once imported ends up being 48 seconds. I am uploading a few clips soon with soe samples.

Slo-mo is recorded mute, right?

Where is the smooth slow on the NX5U? I'm not seeing it in the menu.
Where should I be looking? Thanks

Slow Motion is found in MODE---CAMERA----SLOW MOTION REC-----Choose Storage type-----Choose 3,6, or 12 sec lengths. Done

Note. The Slow Motion record feature will only work in 1080 60i mode or I assume SD 60i as well.
It IS buried pretty deep if you ask me. Maybe I'll assihn it a button if it's possible.

NX5U 120fps Smooth Slow Motion Test on Vimeo

Filmed at 1080 Smooth Slow Motion mode at 3 second option.
ends up being 120fps when recorded.

Nothing altered, just clips assembled and a music track thrown down. Tested with my new Home built 3' Slider at the Mission in San Juan Capistrano , Ca

It doesent even look like it degrades quality.

Not too much. I CAN tell the difference when it is viewed on an HDTV but pretty good. The 6 and 12 second options degrade the video more.

The slider worked great. How did you build it?

Here is where I got the guide for the DIY Slider. Costs about $180 after all parts and workes great.

I know Sony say the 6 and 12 second takes in slo-mo degrade the image more and more, but why should this be so - does anybody know? The three time-lengths all use the same frame rate.

I see the shutter speed is bumped up quite a lot (1/215th slowest - no limit shorter), so it does mean you need good light for filming slo-mo. Also there's a tiny zoom-in when you switch to slo-mo filming, anyone else noticed this (like when you add the extra OIS, but less severe).

I only stick with the 3 sec slowmo because the quality does get noticeably worst with the 12 and 6 sec options.

Most likely it is due to the size of the cameras buffer. In smooth slow motion the info can't be written to card in realtime because there is too much data, so it gets stored in the internal buffer. Because the buffer size cannot change, and the frame rate is the same in all three modes, as the length of recording increases, the resolution decreases to give the same amount of data.

It's similar to how some DSLR's work. With my Pentax K-X, shooting at 12mp, I can shoot a constant burst at about 4.5fps for about 2.5 seconds. If I lower the resolution to 2mp, I can shoot a constant burst for up to 6-7 seconds before the buffer fills up.

I do love the NX5's slo-mo, and have just noticed an interesting fact. When you switch to any of the slo-mo time-frames (3, 6 or 12 secs) the camera always jumps out of the 'Active' Steadyshot mode. I guess this is to retain as much image quality as is possible in these modes.

Active steadyshot uses memory that it needs for the slowmotion buffer ?

whats the best setting for rec slowmotion movie with glidetrak 3,6, or 12 sec and what sooter speed?

Tom Hardwick

The slow motion loses more and more quality the longer you record, so I only ever use the 3 secs.
The default shutter speed of 1/215th sec is the one to use.

In a previous post I was saying how easy it was to do hand-held tracking shots with the NX5 in its slo-mo mode using long telephoto settings. I've used this on wedding films for 'first time successful' shots of flowers, table decorations and so on.

Here's some very short examples pulled straight from the SDHC card (so are mute).

Hi Tom,
I really like the way you have your NX5 set up. I love the sharpness and colours. Would you be prepared to share your profile settings.?
