Whilst waiting for my Canon (Monday! Sob!), I have had a little time to play with a spreadsheet. If, say, my EX1 voxpops are shot around 30% on the zoom scale, what would that mean in terms of lens on a Canon 550D?

Thought I'd share the results. The EX1 numbers are eyeballed pretty roughly. Just wanted to find out what I'd need to match the stock lens (and better it in the wide department). If it's popular, will update and improve it, maybe add Z1, 2/3" scale etc.

Enjoy!

Very useful info, Matt. Thanks for the calculations-- a true sign of someone with extra time on his hands while waiting for a camera.

I've often wondered how these comparison focal lengths are calculated, because the 1.77:1 video frame differs from the 1.5:1 35mm frame. And is APS-C 1.5:1 also?

35mm lenses are conventionally described by their diagonal field of view, whereas for movies a horizontal fov would make sense.

So looking at Matt's chart - does the EX1 see as wide horizontally (but not vertically) as a 32 mm lens (should it exist) on a 35 mm camera? I assume no TV or slide mount masking.
