its the NIKON 50mm 1.4 NON AI LATE lens F1.4 going for $100-ish rating 8/10.
-----------------------

I am also looking at another for around $115, the seller says this.
99.9% of 2700 feedbacks.

"MINT CONDITION NIKON 50MM F1.4 LATEST NON AI VERSION LENS- SERIAL # 3837072- WITH BOTH ORIGINAL CAPS- LENS HAS BEEN TESTED AND WORKS PERFECT- WAS USED VERY LITTLE- NO SCRATCHES OR HAZE IN OPTICS- SHOWS ONLY LITTLE DUST INSIDE (WILL NOT AFFECT PICTURE QUALITY"

What do you think everyone?

thanks.

I've had no problems using nikkor lenses on the 5DmkII. The only issue I had was with an old Pentax m42 50mm f1.4 - If you focused to infinity the rear element would sink just far enough into the body to clash with the mirror. Now, it wasn't enough to harm anything, and I got used to close focusing before I switched to live view, but it's something to think about. I don't know if the nikkor will be the same however.

what about the dust issue, should I be worried?

this one here looks a bit different especially the back end. Its fine though right?

A little dust is normal for a lens this age. It shouldn't affect the picture much if at all, and worse case you can just have it cleaned.
Now that I'm looking at this lens, it has that raised rim around the rear element housing. I feel like this might interfere with your mirror. The good news is that you don't harm the function of the lens if you file that down. The problem with f1.4 lenses is that their design usually requires the rear element to be much closer to the sensor, especially toward the infinity focus range. The mirror in the 5D is very large, and doesn't give much room for any protrusions into the body. Some people I've known have gone as far as to shave the mirror in their camera down to allow for these lenses to work. This is one of the limiting factors of a full frame design.

The Nikkor 50 1.4 works fine on my 5D mk2. Here is a link to a previous post on the subject.

so morton you really think I am in the clear with it for the 5D2?

I read you post earlier also, the don't look similar, the two glasses, yours shows some rear element housing too. Yours was fine?

The ebay post shows the metalic hook or whatever looking different than yours. Different series?

Yes mine worked fine, but Richard had to cut the tab off his lens to get it to fit. I don't know what the difference could be. Richard's is an older lens than mine and the listing on Ebay you provided is for an lens older than Richards so you may have to cut the tab off if you buy it.
Either way it's a great lens
cheers

If you hunt around surely you can find a nice 50 1.4 AI or AIs for not much more, MF Nikkors are going for really low prices.

what of this one? It seems to have more than just the tab sticking out on the rear section.

SteveSurely whether the lens is AI or not is irrelevant if it's going to be used on the 5DII? You may as well save money & buy the cheaper totally manual lens.

AFAIK all the AI and AI-s Nikkors work fine with the EOS adapter do they not?
If you've got the budget a lot of people seem to liking the Zeiss lenses, they make a 50 1.4 in EOS mount and it's apparently superrb optically and being manual focus it should have lovely smooth mechanisms.

right now i'm looking at this one
NIKON NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4 AIS MF LENS f1.4 50 AI S MANUAL - eBay (item 140394315357 end time Apr-24-10 19:04:17 PDT) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140394315357&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_5095wt_939)

How would a zeiss 1.4 compare in price? And the adapter(how much)?

The Zeiss is quite pricey Zeiss 50mm f1.4 Planar | (http://www.robertwhite.co.uk/product.asp?P_ID=918&PT_ID=698) but it should be very good and it'll attach directly to the camera rather than needing an adapter as it's Canon EF fit.

wow! $725 on b&h, ouch! Can the f be controlled manually like on the nikon 50mm 1.4?

Steve Phillipps
March 27th, 2010, 05:13 AM
It's all manual, no AF, proper aperture ring - it's definitely the one to have, no question, but as you say, it is pricey. As are the others in the range - they do a 21mm (which by all accounts is one of the best 35mm lenses of all time!), an 85 1.4, a 35 f2 etc. Why not just get a whole set?!!!

you might want to look at the Canon EF 50mm 1.8- very cheap and very nice

Kalulu Ngilo

I have the canon 50mm 1.8, got it for around $65 new in box. Buying the whole set of zeiss glass can get quite expensive.

The reviews on b&h for zeiss 50 1.4 are mixed. I read its more like a f2.8 glass because its difficult to get sharp shots at 1.4. The thing about the nikon 50 1.4 is that I will need to buy the adapter which runs around $270 at b&h. Or even better, buy a used zeiss on ebay. What do you think? I got an offer for an ebay price going for $150, they are gonna give it to me for $135 for the nikon 50mm. Do you all think that's a good price?

Thanks

None of the 50mm f1.4 lenses are very sharp wide open. Generally they tend to be OK at f2 and very good at 2.8, but improve yet further at f4. I got the Sigma 50 1.4 as it's supposed to be the best of the lot wide open as it has aspheric glass. When I tested it vs the latest Nikon 50 1.4G they were about the same, maybe a slight edge to the Sigma but the Nikon had more chromatic abberation.

So the sigma is essentially better? Is it cheaper than both zeiss/nikon 50mm? Any adapters required to use it with the 5D2?

Steve Phillipps
March 27th, 2010, 02:59 PM
You can get it in Canon fit so no adapter needed, but no, it's not cheap - more than the Nikon actually. According to most tests it seems it's better wide open but then beyond about f4 the other start to edge ahead of it.

Dang! Now there so many options to consider. Now what do I do? Is $130 good for a nikon50mm, its the one I'm looking at ebay.

I sometimes use a nikkor 50 f1.2 on a 5dmk2 (and mk1). It's got a much bigger rear element than the f/1.4 lens and I haven't had any trouble with the mirror. It's not very sharp wide open (and has a wicked vignette), but it's decent at 1.4 and great at 2.0.

Oh ok. So I say any nikon 50mm would be without issues. Thanks Liam

hi

allow me to jump on this thread just to ask -- what adapter do you use to have a nikon lens fit in? i have just purchased one on ebay, which came from Hong Kong, and it's either too tight on my nikon lens, so that the iris ring can not move anymore, or too loose. it fits non of my 3 nikon lenses (2 Nikkor and 1 Vivitar)

thats the one btw Nikon AI F Lens To Canon EOS EF Adapter Focus Infinity - eBay (item 280480988008 end time Apr-18-10 01:37:44 PDT) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280480988008#ht_2802wt_906)

would be happy to know of one that works

thanks!

I am not sure whether that one would do the trick. All I know is ppl have been talking about this one here Novoflex | Lens Mount Adapter - Nikon Lens to Can | EOS/NIK

Can anyone confirm the ebay link would be a cheaper alternative that works?

I have 10 Nikon to Canon adapters, several from Fotodiox and some from ebay but not the same as the above link. I have not had a problem with any of them.

Morton and Kalulu, thank you!

the one i got is a cheapo 10 bucks adapter. the one on B&H is 270$, could that be the reason ? :)
Morton, do you too use the cheaper version without a problem? my lenses are over 30 y/o. it's from the early F2 days. is there any reason for them not to work?

thanks again!

Hi Shai, Yes I have several of the cheap adapters and have had no problems. But there are several people selling cheap ones so I don't think they are all the same quality. And it could also depend on the lens it's used on. I also have several Fotodiox professional adapters about $90.00 each and a couple of their consumer grade ones. The professional ones are better made and I use those on the lenses I use more frequently.

cheers
