Just turn the shutter OFF (the switch under the lens).

not sure I understand your reply
I don't need to turn the shutter off, I need to set it to 1/50

What Piotr is saying, is that turnng off the shutter in PAL mode is the exact same thing as 1/50th.
So, if you need 1/50, just turn the shutter off.

Thank Doug. Is that so If I shoot 50i or 25p?
I was asking as the z1 let you dial 1/50 and 1/60

If you shoot 50i, the shutter speed with the switch off is 1/50 and all the selectable speeds are higher. Set to 25p, the shutter speed with the switch off is 1/25 and switched on, you will find that 1/50 is one of the available speeds.

I just had a Euro client send me spec on what camera settings he wants for a PAL shoot on Monday/Tuesday. Could this be right? 1080i/60i/16:9/PAL
I thought it had to be 50i, 1/50th or 25p to be PAL. Please verify if you know the answer.

When it comes to HD there is no 'PAL' or 'NTSC' as such. Just frame sizes and frame/field rates.
There are some 60Hz PAL systems, but mostly PAL is 50Hz.
You should confirm what country your client is expecting the material to work in then have a look on the internet for that country's TV standard.

I appreciate the quick response. I will double-check with the producer--just didn't want to ask a stupid question before I checked it out elsewhere. In the past, all the Royal Dutch Shell videos have been shot in 25p or 50i---so the specs for this job didn't make sense to me this time. thanks again.
