View Full Version : Lacie 2Big Quadra = Red HAL 9000 death

It appears my few month old Lacie 2big Quadra drive has died. Most recent backup was over a week ago so I lost a few days worth of work on the device which was in RAID 0 for speed.

Has anyone else had this happen? The blue light turned red (so now it really looks like HAL) during an edit session. Manual says red means a drive failed....I was hoping that I could buy another and swap drives with the hopes that perhaps something in the case went bad.

Any thoughts appreciated as always.

Thanks

Is it worth the time and cost to have a qualified tech take it apart? I would contact LaCie first and see if they have a replacement program.

Have you tried running Disk Warrior or using OSX's Disk Utility to attempt to repair the disk? If you don't have Disk Warrior I would recommend getting a copy...it has saved me countless times - usually with LaCie drives that inevitably die. I won't ever buy a LaCie drive again.

Thanks Guys. Today I'm redoing the most pressing work first and I'll call Lacie tomorrow to see if they can help recover anything from the crashed drive.

Mike, I don't see it in Disk Utility so I'm guessing the problem is internal.

Jeff, if Lacie will not help. I had several Lacie's to die as well. I would take drive out of case and with kit from granite digital ( emergency kit) I think? It has a power source lead and a sata connection so you can bypass original case. And earlier mention of disc warrior is a must! Most times will save your butt!!!! I have a another program great for finding info, I'll look. probably the best of pulling data from a bad drive. I have found lacie to have a lot of bad power sources. Just my 2 cents.

Charlie Branham makes a good point. On the four occasions my LaCie's have given up the ghost it has been the power adapter every time - the media and data have always been fine. One thing to avoid is de-fragging the disc, which creates too much constant heat for the power box.
