View Full Version : How do you do a split screen in Premiere or After Effects CS5?

I looks pretty basic, but I have never done it before. How do you get a split screen where two videos are show at the same time like people are talking on the telephone to each other? From that point, I would like to make it into a quad screen. Thanks for your ideas.

Look for PIP (Picture in Picture) in the Help file or use Motion/Scale/Position in the Effects Control panel.

One issue to keep in mind if you are doing a true split screen, where your 2 seperate shots will be reconfigured from widescreen to "portrate" aspect ratio:
You can avoid masking type manuvers if you simply overlay the two clips on V1 and V2, then just reposition them so you have the needed portion of the L and R frame revealed.
BUT, for it all to look right, you may have to shoot the L footage with the subject on the right side of the frame, and the R footage with the subject on the left side of the frame.
If the footage is already shot, with subject centered in the frame, you will probably have to mask off the unwanted portions of the frame.
