I've got a request to do a shoot and deliver tapes to mini-DV format, standard definition. I only have the Canon A1 now as a cam that records to tape. Does anyone know if the A1 records tapes in standard def. format that actually play on other brand's decks? I know the A1 can record standard def, but don't know if the tapes are formatted as mini-dv standard or if they are just capable of being played back only in the A1.

Anyone have any idea? Thanks so much in advance!!

MiniDV is a standard format, if recorded in SD, it SHOULD play on any SD miniDV camcorder or deck. In theory, at least.

In practice, though, it does not always happen. I had tapes shot with a GL2 that would play video fine on a Sony camcorder but the audio would be on/off intermittently. I had to borrow that same GL2 again to capture that particular tape.

Shoot 60i and stay away from shooting in the Canon 24F mode and I believe you should be fine. I know that only Canon cameras like their 24f mode, but I've played back XHA1 tapes shot in both SD and HDV in Sony cameras and haven't had any trouble.

If given a choice, make sure you record in SP mode not LP.
