We are about to start working on a new film project and a friend of mine wants to handle all of the music. He is a very talented musician and has put together a team to do all the recording and instrumentation, but this is the first film he has worked on. I was wondering if the is a good tutorial out there I could point him toward to get him going in the right direction.

Wikiversity has an interesting online course for film scoring. Actually, there are two; for non-musicians (i.e. filmmakers) and musicians:

Film scoring - Wikiversity (http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Film_scoring)

Also, there is a free, online version of one of the most significant books about orchestration, "Principles of Orchestration" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

See if these will help.

Forgot the link to that Rimsky-Korsakov book; it is here:

Send your friend to the Welcome to the VI Control Forum! Musicians helping Musicians! (http://vi-control.net) forums. There are many professional film composers who post there.
