I was wandering if anybody has used the open back for the Go Pro housing on an open top race car. Do you get a lot of wind noise? I've used the camera with the complete underwater housing and get no wind noise but the car sound is greatly reduced.

yes you get wind noise.

just depends on what kind of sound you want.

try testing the GoPro on your own car with the different housings to determine the various results you'll get. Doesn't take much to get a bunch of wind noise.

Not on a race car but I put mine on a window mount on my Landrover all the time. Yes....there is a ton of wind noise.

If I recall correctly the company literature says to use the open back for speeds up to 100 mph, and the closed back after that.
I use the open back when mounted on my front wheel hub on my Harley, but I have covered the openings with small pieces of adhesive moleskin. It allows the sound through fairly well and eliminates some of the wind roar

Here's a video with the open back on the windshield with the suction cup mount and all the windows down. Speeds from 50-120.

Looks like I'll stick with the total enclosed housing. Maybe I can rig up a sound recorder with a mic and add better sound in post. I wish the GoPro had a mic input so I could hide a quality mic out of the wind in the car.

I'm not sure what the board policy is about linking other sites ....the Mods may nuke this, if not, this may give you an idea.
