Hi Guys

Can any of you please suggest a dynamic handheld mic with an excellent windscreen that I can use in conjunction with the extra plugin from the "Sennheiser | Evolution G2 100 Series - Wireless | EW100ENGG2" kit that I have?

I basically want to use a dynamic handheld mic as a 'wireless mic' by attaching the Sennheiser wireless plugin to it. However, after looking at dynamic handheld mics online, I'm not sure which mics have the correct 'sockets' at the bottom of them (pins) that will be compatible with the wireless plugin.

I would like a dynamic handheld mic that can be used in very windy conditions and not have any wind noise. Would I need to be an additional 'windshield' or any other accessories for the mic?

Budget for the mic would be anything between £50 (80 dollars) to £300 (480 dollars) if needs be.

Any suggestions whatsoever would be really appreciated!

Hi Peter the standard mics for such an application are omni directional and the beyer M58 and the electrovoice RE50 tend to be the favorites, you can add a wind gag and they are pretty good in wind.

The shure omni reporter mic is another option but the two above tend to be the ones most used in the UK.

Brilliant Gary thanks for your feedback. What kind of wind gag would you suggest for one of these handheld mics? There seem to be so many different types! Going to order the mic and windgag today hopefully.

You can get cheaper coloured ones but the shure type are very good and the foam is better.

The main thing to bear in mind is that the person using the mic will have to have it quite close to their mouth so that you get enough signal to noise ratio against the wind noise, make sure you do some tests and set the gain on the radio mic properly as distortion can be a problem in this sort of situation. If there are interviews being done it may not be easy but if it's just an in-vision presenter it should be OK.

I sometimes also use an AT875r mic in a rode pistol grip with a WS/6 softie on it as a small shotgun such as the 875 can be used to good effect in windy situations, I have the phantom sennheiser plug in transmitter so it can power such a mic but an RE50 / M58 combo can work just as well and sometimes better in the wind and rain.

I think so but ask studiospares themselves as they can tell you better.

Generally the SM58 size windshields tend to fit most of these mics and you can even get them at maplins, e-bay is also a good source for them.

An update: the Shure SM58 LC Windshield at Studiospares and Sennheiser MD42 arrived today and are perfectly compatible and am getting very nice results.
