I just came upon this article yesterday...

Excerpt from: ProVideo Coalition.com: TecnoTur by Allan Tépper (http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/atepper/story/mac_mini_for_pro_video_editing_a_field_report_from_guatemala/)

"Staff HDTV/Alta Definición has decided (for now) to stay with Final Cut Pro 7 since Final Cut Pro X (as of today) cannot work completely with a professional a/v interface. Although they already owned Final Cut Pro 7 and the monitors, they needed to purchase the new Mac Minis with Thunderbolt, the disk arrays, and the professional audio/video i/o device immediately after IBC. More on the topic....

If your MacMini fits the specs Apple specifies for FCPX, then yes but not all MacMini models do. It's probably slow at best especially if you don't covert all video files to ProRes.

go here for the specs:
Apple - Final Cut Pro X - System Requirements and Tech Specs (http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/)

The new models with Thunderbolt should work pretty well.

A smallish internal SSD and external Thunderbolt array might be the optimal low cost setup. Same with the Mac Air and Macbook Pro.

I'm curious if there's a Thunderbolt to e-sata adapter yet.

Edit: The entry imac is likely a much better value than the high end mac mini.

I convert everything to ProRes anyway since I shoot AVCHD. If only you could put a high-end video card in the thing.... The thought is just intriguing though............

I am on a base model (entry) 2011 Mac Mini running both FCP X and FCP 7, plus Photoshop CS5.1, Premiere Pro CS5.5 and other apps. I say this because I didn't think it could handle it, but the Mac mini just roars along. I have 8GB of RAM in it, too.

I can't open DaVinci Resolve Lite with the Intel 3000 graphics.

I have the new server version of the Mac Mini and it works well for me as an emergency/back-up station, 8GB RAM as well. Waiting patiently to pounce on the mythical new MacPro (replacing my '08 MacPro) whatever form it takes. God help me if Apple takes away "the beast" (my name for a tricked out MacPro, I prefer it over "the truck").
