Check out the GS400 reviews at dvspot.com. There are a number of
reviews of cameras in that price range that include video clips under the
same circumstances. They're not particularly scientific, but you get a good sense of the deal. I must comment that dvspot and camcorderinfo came to different conclusions when comparing the GS250 and the Canon Optura60.
dvspot thought the 60 had better low light performance in a casual "pan the room" video while camcorderinfo measured the differences and concluded the GS250 was much better. Of course, the GS400 is even better than the 250,
and at camcorderinfo, you can see by how much.

Doug, yes, the only one not shot on the GS400 was the Time Is My Crisis music video, shot on a really old JVC one-chipper back in 2002.

Joshua, nice video's. Just curious, did you use ProCinema on some of them, or Wide mode? What NLE do you use for your editing? Thanks, PK

Also, I forgot to ask, but Bandito 's Way and Winters Day lboth look wider then 16x9, more like 2.35:1. How did you shoot that, Wide or (looks like) ProCinema with a anamorphic lens added on? Thanks Again for the info and letting us see your great movies, impressive.

Paul, I shoot in WIDE more only, which is 60i. I convert to 24p in post, which requires 60i footage. PROCINEMA is basically 30p and would not convert well. I edit in Premiere Pro 1.5, but I also use AfterEffects, DVFilm Maker and some other tools for specific tasks.

I have shot a few films in 2.35:1, Winter's Day and AGTC. I shoot those in Wide mode and crop down to 2.35:1 (strip 56 pixels each off the top and bottom of the 16:9 frame). This gives me some flexibility to adjust the framing up or down while editing, very forgiving. Leonardo was 2:1. Bandito's way was around 2.35:1, but that was edited by my friend Gabe in Vegas.

I'll second that YUMMY!! Just wondering why this was in 4x3, cause if fit the shape of the cake the best? How did you move the camera about so smoothly, looks like you had to have some sort of mini dolly or tripod on wheels? Great lighting, how do you set exposure? My GS400 in auto or program modes always seems to make the image too light and somewhat washed out. Do you just use the zebra's and close the lens so there are none showing in the lighlights? Thanks, sorry to be asking such amatuerish questions.

Glad that you like it.

I just follow Joshua's tip to set camera color settings in the camera menu. And all settings were set to min. I put two table lights which are around 20w and 30w to shine to the cake both on one side of the cake. I set aperture to be f4.0 which I was told that was the best number. I set 1/60 and manully adjust that light position to the cake to be right instead of adjust aperture to fit lighting environment. I did not white balance the light as I feel if I balance it, the light would not be warm anymore. I set the camera to be to auto focus.

It is mpeg2 format which should be played by software DVD player i.e. PowerDVD, Microsoft Windows Media Player.

It is shot by Panasonic NV-GS400. I turned off optical stablizer inside the camera. The camera setting is f4.0 wide pro-cinema function with Joshua's tips about turn down all settings for color to min.

I manufacture stabilizer similar to steadicam. Someone want to see the performance of my stabilizer for go upstairs and fast moving shot. So I made this video for him. Once made, I thought that will be good to share for others viewing too.

I've got a short film on my website that was shot on the GS400. It was my first try with the camera, so I messed up some of the settings. It's called "TV Dinner," and we shot it over a weekend, just to mess around. I also have stills from the GS400, used to shoot two other films (with much better picture quality), namely "The Mermaids Singing" and "My Hero."
