This is not a question about whether striping tapes is a good idea, hard the camera etc. Those topics have been discussed.

I would prefer to stripe a tape before use. I am going to be shooting 24P on the DVX-100A. My understanding is that this mode = NON drop frame. If I stripe a tape in some other camera (an older cheaper camera) using NON drop frame, I would expect that to be roughly equivalent to striping in the DVX itself. Yes, and assuming nothing was terribly out of whack in the older cheaper camera.

(I had used the older cheaper camera to stripe tapes regularly when my primary camera was a GL2 and it worked well)

I would stripe in the same mode as I'm going to shoot. Just to be safe.

Have you tried what I am suggesting and had a problem? My "cheap" camera does not shoot 24P but it can record non-drop frame. As far as time code goes, I'm thinking that should be sufficient.

I haven't tried since I don't have a 24p capable camera (I'm in PAL country
as well, so no 24 fps here at all). However, in the past we've had problems
here where previous recordings (what striping is) intervering with a new
recording. For that reason I'm assuming it would be safer to have the same
base signal on tape.

Just as a side note. I never striped myself. I wind and rewind the tape (a bit)
to make sure it is properly tensioned and I usually then record a minute of
black with no audio.

Then I start to shoot my video. At the end of shooting I also lay down some
black (this to make it easier to continue shooting on that tape and keep
proper timecode). I never record in the last 1 - 2 minutes on tape either.
