It will be interesting to see if this camera is good enough out of the box, without a hack, to get people's interest.

50mbps AVCHD / 72mbps Intraframe codec.

Panasonic would really be doing something wrong if that needed a hack to be usable. (Hopefully it is 4:2:2 too.)

Keep in mind there are plenty of GH2 hacks around 50mbits and many have found going higher to matter. Bitrates are not everything and pretty much the worse way to judge the quality of an encoder. SONY 50mbit looks great but it can still break up in extreme situations.

50 mbps in AVCHD? I don't think that's possible.

You're right, 50 Mb/s is not part of AVCHD standard. If such a codec will be available in the GH3, it might be the so called "AVC LongG", low-end member of new AVC-Ultra family. This would be a sensation, as AVC LongG is 4:2:2 10bit, and that is not what you would expect in a sub-1500 Euro photo camera.

If it is 4:2:2 they will really shake up the industry.

Keep in mind intraframe is not possible in the AVCHD spec either so they are clearly doing something "different" what that means I'm sure we will find out on Monday. Having intraframe recording is also unheard of in this price range as well and we already know it is happening so maybe they did go all out.

But also keep in mind nowhere in the AVC-Ultra spec was it official that it could record 1080p60.

Early drafts listed 2k and 1080p60, but that information has completely disappeared from recent papers. It could be 1080i for all we know.
