I'm trying to puzzle out the possible benefits of HDV->SD downconversion. Are there any? Or am I better off just shooting in SD? I will be delivering the end result in SD with Nattress for 24p emulation.

Specifically, which of the following workflows would yield the best result?

1) Shoot in HDV -> Capture in FCP, treat with Nattress -> Downconvert to SD
2) Shoot in HDV -> Downconvert to SD -> Capture in FCP, treat with Nattress
3) Shoot in SD -> Capture in FCP, treat with Nattress

I'd go with 1) for best quality. The latest Standards Converter has a downconvert option, which does the appropriate filtering to stop aliassing on the downconvert.

Shoot in HDV -> Capture in FCP, treat with Nattress -> Downconvert to SD using Nattress Standards Converter

And in your view, shooting in HDV and doing a high-quality downconvert to SD is superior to simply shooting in SD?

Is all one step. The Standards Converter does 60i to 24p and downrezzzing all in one step.

I thought I looked on your site but maybe I missed it do you have any clips of the down convert from 60i to 24p?

Thinking of the Z1 for this.

I think you're program can convert 25p to 24p also?

So if you have the Sony Z1 would it be better to shoot in 60i or 50i, of course with no CF modes on?

I don't have any such clips. You'd have to download the demo and try it on your own video. Try the 2.5.2 demo as it should be great for this.

You can also try shooting 50i (deinterlace with Film Effects) and using, say cinema tools to slow it down 4% to 24p, and that's also a workflow that works.

This is kind of stupid, I'll be able to check next time I go to my office as I have your Standards conversion filter set, but I'll ask anyhow. Do you have an option to downconvert to SD 4:3 and cut off the edges of the frame and eventually adjust the framing left or right ?

I don't have a pan and scan option, I'm afraid. I think you'd have to do that in FCP before conversion.
