For general idea on kind of lens (make, fixed or zoom mm) users use with their C100 for Wedding coverages ?

canon 17-55 f2.8 IS... almost the only lens you need - in my humble opinion. I take my 50mm f1.4 along and sometimes my 70-200 f2.8 non-IS... but really the 17-55 is fast, has IS, and covers a pretty decent range.

I don't shoot many weddings any more, but I would feel very comfortable leaving that lens on for most anything... it could use a little more reach on the telephoto end... but, all in all, a pretty damn good lens on the c100.

Any one using Sigma 18 - 35 f1.8 ?

I use the Sigma 17-50 2.8 on my C100 90% of the time. I have an assortment of primes and a 70-200 f4, but its the Sigma 17-50 that I mainly use. People don't about it a lot, but it has been really solid for me. And it's about $350 cheaper than the Canon right now.

A question for you if you would. I posted another thread asking if someone using the Sigma lens 17-50 f/2.8 if when the lens is off camera and in your hand, and you rotate your wrist gently left and right, do you feel something inside the lens move. And do you hear a dampening kind of sound of something moving?

I just received a new Sigma 17-50 and not certain if it might be a lemon. The store's sales department says it might just be the IS, but I wouldn't think it would move or should move without it being attached to the camera. My Canon 24-105 doesn't move internally or make a sound when I move it gently back and forth in my hand.

So my question is, does yours?

I sold the Sigma 17-50 for the 18-35. The 18-35 is a gem of a lens, and I generally stick with it, a 50f1.4
and an 85 for the majority of the day, except for the ceremony which sees the 70-200.

The lens you mention sounds great, but I need a little more reach since I am usually shooting stills as well, and extra reach allows me to do more with less time in switching.

Did your 17-50 lens make any unusual noise when you took it off camera? I am just trying to determine if the lens I have has a problem before I use it for an assignment and find out I have a problem then,mor have a repair bill later out of warranty.

actually, yes it did. worked fine on camera, great, cheap piece of glass. If I wasn't shooting stills as well
I'd have only APS-C lenses, but I use mostly all primes. IF i pick up a C100 MK II, I am getting the 18-135 with it for face tracking AF. I may grab one even if I don't to use on my 70D

Thank you. I will give it a shot. I just wanted to make certain it wasn't a defect in the lens that would impair its operation. The only time I ever heard something rattle inside a lens was a battered piece of pool gear at a newspaper I once worked for.

My Canon 70-200mm F4 IS clunks like a can of spray paint when it's off and sounds like a coffee grinder when it's on. Many lenses and even cameras with optical image stabilizers make some noise when powered off.

Thanks. I have a Canon 24-105 and a 70-200 f/4 and neither make a sound whether in operation or if I remove them from them from my still body or c100.

So that is why I was concerned.

There are two Canon 24-105mm lenses. Both have image stabilization.

The older one is a constant aperture f/4L. High quality glass, but very noisy IS, like a Craftsman ratchet.

The newer one is a variable aperture f/3.5 to f/5.6. Nice sharp glass, and it's STM, making it very quiet even with IS switched on.

Without question, the Canon EF 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. A thorough search of the dvinfo.net site will confirm this.

It all depends on the look and feel you are going for. What do you want to viewer to experience? How do you want them to feel?

Personally I'm a prime guy and value image quality over convenience so my favorites are Canon 50mm 1.2L, Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART, and Canon 135mm 2.0L. I also really enjoy using my Zeiss 100mm 2.0 Makro. Zeiss glass has a unique rendering and produces a 3d like image.

I once filmed a wedding when I was first starting out making a living in this business and vowed (sic) never to do it again. Miss or screw up one shot and you are in very hot water and if I was working on my own the last thing I would want to be doing would be to be having to change lenses all the time.

Having said that, with these types of cameras, there is also no one lens that will do the whole job either. I would recommend one these the two zoom lenses together with a couple of nice 1.4 or 2.8 prime lenses for more formal shots.

As others have pointed out the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS is a great lens. The resolution figures are regarded as among the very best for an APS-C standard zoom lens. Very good image stabilisation.

However, if you have, or are are planning to get the AF upgrade or are thinking of upgrading to the C100 Mk II you would benefit from having a few STM lenses in your bag. These lenses, with their near silent focus motors, work very well with the C100 /300 cameras and offer great value for money.

If I'm in a situation where I need to get a wide variety of shots quickly I use the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS which is a remarkably good lens. Sure it's not a 'L' series lens but it has a great range and is very sharp. Again this lens has excellent image stabilisation.

If you work at 5.6 and turn on the zoom iris correct function you can use the full range of the lens without making any iris adjustments. This lens is also comparable with the new Face Detection AF available on the C100 Mk II.

All, thank you so much for your replies. I am an old newspaper guy for 25 plus years so I have prime lenses out the......but you don't know that. I plan to stay with the original c100 since it does what I need and for the remaining years I will be shooting. I have the Canon 24-105 and like it, but for some of the shooting I do it is not fast enough, shooting in some locations for diocesan newspaper I do work for. Mostly when I have the time I work with a couple of primes, a Canon 28 IS and an older 85. But for some of what I shoot I am also during stills at the same time as I am shooting video and every moment counts. So a zoom is helpful, the 2.8 more so than the f/4.

My main concern with the Sigma lens is that I was hearing movement and feeling movement inside the lens while just holding it in my hands. To me, not a good sign, as I don't want repairs down the road if the lens just happened to be a lemon. So have decided to return it and pick up the Canon's 17-55 lens. At least as a CPS member I can get it in for service if needed for a quicker turnaround.

I appreciate everybody's input. I read this forum fairly often as there is always a good discussion about gear and technique and find it immensely helpful as I go forth and do more video work, which I actually enjoy as well as doing stills.

Chris, an aside, in another thread, the single person crew, you mentioned starting another forum for single operators. Is there a particular name for that thread?

I'd like to say it'll be up in about 24 hours, hopefully less. It's no big deal to create a forum, but I'll have to write some language regarding how it should be used, and that takes a little bit of work, and I already have a full day going on here.

The main thing I want to avoid is a fairly common problem with our Weddings & Events forum, and that is the gear-specific conversations happening there that really belong in our gear-specific boards. Usually the pretext is, "I'm an event videographer therefore my question about microphones belongs in the Event Videography forum." That's not the ideal way to categorize things because most people here are event videographers. The entire DVi forum is for wedding & event videographers, not exclusively of course, but the whole site serves them, not just the wedding & event forum.

The same thing applies to the one-person crew concept: the entire DVi site is already here to serve you. Adding a dedicated board to discuss issues that are unique to a one-person crew is, as you all have just demonstrated, a good thing to have and we will have it -- you have convinced me. At the same time, I'll have to draft the policy statement that lets people know why their question about Camera X was moved to the Camera X forum (which I need to adapt for the weddings & events board as well).

Also, one more thing -- I don't like to start empty boards. Ideally we should have at least a dozen pre-existing conversations that we can move in there right away. I'll look for whatever seems to qualify, but meanwhile, you guys can help out a lot by pointing out any threads we already have that you think should be in there. The best way to do this is to click the little "!" icon to the left of any post, which is the Report Post button. In the message box please state "good candidate for one-person crews forum" or something to that effect. That would be a huge help, so thanks in advance."
