Hey there-
We have some video we've shot/produced in AVCHD and would like to make it available not just on our website but also on mobile devices. Was wondering if anyone has a suggestion where to look for info regarding current practices, formats, and settings for delivery to iphones, ipads, android, etc.

I've got Handbrake installed, and see that there are a lot of options, but I need some education first.

I did a search here on DVinfo but was not able to find what I was looking for. Sure appreciate any help/direction you might be able to give me.

Thanks

Handbrake is a great tool for prepping video for mobile devices, and, there are presets.

The real sweet spot is 720p, h.264 (x264), main profile, 4.0 level, at an avg. bitrate of about 1400Kbps. Don't forget to check "web optimized".

That will play back on almost all recent devices. If you have badly lit, highly detailed, handheld, or fast action footage you may need a higher bitrate. Note that HB's "constant quality" method at default settings produces higher bitrates than needed.

As for continuing education, come to my compression and streaming class in Portland :-) Actually, there are darn few opportunities for courses in compression and streaming. streamingmedia.com and streaminglearningcenter.com are pretty good online resources.

If you use Adobe software you may have the Adobe Media Encoder. It is also very good at this.
