First post here after lurking for a long time. You guys are a gold mine of info.

I live in the US and have the opportunity to buy an XM2 from a guy in the UK at what I consider to be a good price. He swears it is NTSC and has US power connections on it but I'm not sure he really knows the difference.

Are there any real differences between the XM2 and GL2 or is it just a branding thing? Is the whole device set up for European power or can I just replace the battery charger if it has the UK connectors? Did they actually make NTSC XM2s? With US connectors?

I appreciate any advice anyone can give me.

Thanks.

I'm in the UK and my XM2 came with both UK and US-style power cables. However, to my knowledge XM2s are inherently PAL. The GL2 is identical but NTSC. I would question your seller a little more throughly to figure out if he's being completely honest....get photos that show the camera with NTSC written on it!

Thanks, that's good advice. I've emailed him for another picture. I do have some photos of the camera, and when I look at it closely I'd swear it says GL2 NTSC although it isn't very clear. The guy uses XM2 and GL2 interchangeably, maybe he's just calling it XM2 cause he's in Europe. I'll be able to tell better if he sends me another photo.

On the outside of the LCD door mine says :

"3CCD DIGITAL VIDEO CAMCORDER XM2 PAL"

on the bottom it says:

"DM-XM2 E"

And remember, for many purposes, the PAL version is BETTER than the NTSC version. For a more detailed review of that, wait for another post, but in short, the 25p mode is easy to slow to a filmic 24p, and the resolution is slightly better, I believe.

If I would have known, I would have bought a PAL cam instead of an NTSC, and I live in the U.S. Only drawback is that you can't direct-out to the T.V.

Anybody else chime in on that?

True DJ, res is better and 25 fps is better, also the screen dimensions are different. The battery charger is universal, nothing more to change than the charger to wall cable, a very standard item. Any laptop cable will fit for example.
