Thanks for the compliments everyone! The scene was actually pretty simple to do, just required a bit of image editing in post.

First what we did was setup the camera on a tripod, then, had me cross the street on the bike, then bike off camera. We timed it so that after I crossed the street safetly, a bus drove by. In Premiere, I placed the clips ontop of each other, then cropped the right side of the "me biking" clip.

So for the first part of the clip, there were two seperate clips playing. As soon as the bus was in contact with me, I took out the "me biking" clip completely, then replaced myself with a image file of me on the bike. I then keyframed it out of the scene and added the sound effect.

Hello everyone! I've decided to post a link to a short film I made a year ago (Graduation short), that scored me a First for my degree. I've only recently managed to wittle it down to a more comfortable 10 minutes, so it's now up on MediaSpine and TriggerStreet.

Synopsis:
A horrifying tale of a mother and son terrorised by the mysterious and supernatural presence of a young boy.

Kim, a young mother going through a tough divorce whilst working two jobs in plagued by visions of a nightmarish incident, which took place in her past. What are these visions and what do they mean?

Notes:
If anyone is interested, the film was shot over 3 days, for £500, on a Canon XM2. The lead actress is called Maye Choo, she has since worked on BBC's Silent Witness. The young lad was called Brandon Mac, and has never acted before! Any further questions feel free to ask!

I enjoyed it. The pacing was good. The scares weren't too over the top. The story and style weren't all that original, but you did it well, so that's okay by me.

I did feel that a lot of the scenes were way too dark. Sometimes it was hard to see what was going on. Also, there were a number of scenes where the actress had a lot of backlight and you couldn't see her face very well. It would have been nice to have some additional light on her face for those scenes.

This is all said, however, without any knowledge of what tools you had at your disposal and how many people were helping you out. Mostly I just wanted more light in a lot of the scenes. Everything else was done very well.

In terms of tools and crew, I used a CamCrane 200, and a GlideCam, although the GlideCam was useless due to the small corridors, and I was a rubbish operator!

As for lighting, all I had was one red head, three gels, (Red, Green and Blue)some diffuser (which caught fire), and a reflector (which was useful!).

Crew wise, just me and my fiancee! I could have had a larger crew, but that house was so small, it would have made the shoot much longer just by moving people about! I prefer smaller crews anyway, things seem to get done quicker!

This is the first DVi video I viewed on my new Apple Cinema Display. I like your lighting, the bouncing cam, the profile at mic shot and the talking mirror image. That camera (and op) make for a very nice filmy look. Oh and nice job syncing the whole thing. Overall, very good.

Hey everybody, just got done with our studio's second project, a music video from local Seattle-based industrial music act Tau Factor. It was shot over a weekend on various locations, but primarily onboard the USS Turner Joy, an inactive Destroyer docked at Bremerton, WA. The other shots were done inside a small studio with greenscreen capabilities. (I was both the director and the DP) The video was shot with a Canon XL2 and edited on Final Cut Pro with assistance from Motion with some animated effects.

Hi John, I enjoyed both the video and the song (the last dollar part of the song more). Anyway, I'm wondering how you did two things:
1. Make the scene bounce--is that done with the camera or in post?
2. You do this several times, but at :31 in, there's a stutter in his movement effect that I like. Do you take two separate clips and just cut a few frames of each together? Or is it two separate parts of the same take? His head is very close to aligned as his body stutters.

To make the scene bounce, I did it with the camera just by shaking the tilt to the beat of the song. I originally thought they did that in post but by a pure stroke of stupidness, I found out I could do it just by shaking the camera lol.

Those stutter parts are actually unedited. Everynow and then the camera shaking and his movement would synchronize in a way that made his movement real stuttery. It was an accident that turned out to work.

Glad you liked it, it was a great learning experience and hopefully I will build off of this.

It's my first post but I'm a longtime reader of this forum and dvxuser (the usual)

Random information about the movie:
- Shot with a Panasonic DVX100B and a Sony Digital 8 TRV250 (for reasons obvious in the film)
- 22 actors
- shot in two days
- over 25 special effect shots
- the film is french with english subtitles
- amateur short film made for a contest in Quebec by the National Film Board of Canada; got ranked in the 10 best out of 335 films submitted
- also very amateur in terms of costs to produce it: less than 300$ (beer, props and renting the camera)
- 4 days of 3d renders
- over 80 hours of post prod in Adobe Premiere, Adobe After-Effects and 3D Studio Max.

Don't hesitate to leave comments on the film as I'll probably do some more changes if I try to push the film into more film fests this summer (see if my short film is worth it)

Is there a reason you rendered the 3D so flat and cartoonish? If you are going for realism - maybe try grabbing location HDR photos and rerendering while splitting up your renders into passes so you can really blend in your effects. Also, when the chopper is shooting at you and the rockets are bursting, throw some camera shake into the scene and some heavier dust? Fun concept - I liked it but IMO I think with the quality of the footage you really need to push for photoreal renders that blend well - kinda like what Tetra Vaal did... or the Toyota truck meets meteor commercial

I found a nice way to combine two of my hobbies photo/video and RC models :) The setup is: 420 lines bullet camera, 2.4 GHz transmitter/receiver, 12 dB yagi antenna, recorded on DV camcorder. I wonder if anyone knows how to disable AVG and auto color functions on these 'bullet' cameras. Mine is based on chipset from Sharp. Thanks.

Somehow, I think there is a heartwarming family movie about a little boy or girl that builds a r/c plane with their parents and flies it in some kind of "championships". And of course--a bad guy that flies rc planes with a bad attitude.

That last shot as the plane comes down from the heavens and taxis towards the operator is something you don't even see in movies!

Thanks for the comment. I'm indeed a lot more efficient in After-Effects than I am in 3D Studio Max, turning the helicopter scenes into something more absurd and cartoonish than I wanted at first. With a budget, it's clear that I should go with someone who's really good at 3D instead of doing it by myself. The stuff coming out of The Embassy Visual Effects (Tetra Vaal, Scion, etc..) is just amazing; tightly integrated into the real world.

Was your shutter speed constant? Could also be lit vs. backlit blades on the prop.

yup I was shooting 25 fps so my shutter was always 1/50

If youre good at AE, then you're in good shape. I think the animation looks fine. Just start setting up those render passes on separate renders. You throw those HDR files in there for your light sources and you are going to be able to pull it off pretty well I think. Theres a lot of links on the net about rendering out passes and layers... this project here had a two day turn around here so I didnt have time to make it real nice and the model was put together real fast. I rendered with HDR and pushed out several passes so I could control the specular, ambient, etc. http://www.jeremyhughes77.com/_qt/tabletSound_9-25b.mov so I know you could pull it off too ;) ...plus if you render out HDR passes as well, AE can work with those now too so you would have even more control!

Nice experiment. How many cameras did you actually use? Or did you simply change angles each time, and play the same piece each time?

It appears that you had at least two cameras, and the close-ups could have simply been synched?

Two cameras.

A DVX100B and a JVC cam. I thought about just synching but I had little time to setup since the room was only free for about 30 minutes so I grabbed the extra camera and knocked it out in about 15 minutes. Now I just need to find a professional studio with a piano and time so I can really spruce it up.

First off— It looks like it might be pretty funny. The female seems believable as a character.

As for the "trailer"—
It doesn't really start or stop. It just appears and then vanishes. You might want to check out the movie trailer section on apple.com (www.apple.com/trailers) to see a reference. Usually they tell part of the plot to get the viewer interested in the story. You might even throw in some text to help the viewer (ie: "An addiction" then "leads to an intervention") Usually the "highlight text" is over a black background. You might want to add some music too. Just as long as it doesn't overpower the actor's voices. Final touches: the title, directed by info, a green preview slide at the beginning, final credits at the end showing the website and/or release date or just "coming soon."
