I'm rather ignorant about mics and am looking for a single spot that tells what's available and what each thing does. Ya know just a basic chart maybe that says mic type and usage and what works best with my camera for given situations. I'm considerng getting a MA-100 or MA-200 ( not sure I understand the differences there ) because I know I want to be able to use at least 2 external mics and I like the shoulder rest feature. Sorry this is so vague and naive, but I really don't know much about this yet and am trying to learn.

Hi Mark,

Many of your answers can be found by using the search function in the upper right corner. The basic difference between the MA-100 and MA-200 is the number of audio connectors. The Skinny http://www.dvinfo.net/canon/xl1s-skinny.php#ma200on the DV Info is a good start. Canon's site has good info also http://www.canondv.com/xl1s/a_audio_access.html If you have additional questions post back and I'll try to answer them.

The Shure.com web site has some good information on mics and using them.

Here's a site that has pretty good "Mic 101" information, lists, comparison charts, and specs on quite a few different ones. You may find that it's geared for pro audio but it should get you started anyway.

Hope it helps,

Also, Jay Rose (he does the Audio column for DV Magazine) has some good information on his site: www.dplay.com

He also answers questions quickly on the dv.com audio forum.
