The reason I ask is because Th eEdirol does not have balanced line/mic in. The Edirol Guys at video forum assure me that this will be okay just wanted to double check before purchase.

As long as you accept that the XLR cable will not be balanced in that configuration.

Here is another option for you. For about the same price as the Edirol R1 you can get a Marantz PMD660 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=362023&is=REG) and have XLR inputs with phantom power. I just bought one back in December and I’ve been very happy with it. It records 48K/16-bit just like DV audio. I’m using it with an AT897 shotgun on a boom.

Greg, if you used this transformer-based adapter you could have a balanced cable run and a mini plug for the Edirol:

Of course, If your run is less than 25 feet or so, an unbalanced run is not likely to be a problem.

John mentioned the Marantz as an option to look at before purchasing the Edirol. You might also want to look at the new TASCAM recorder with timecode.

As usual some really helpful info I'm gonna check it all out now.
