I am looking at putting clips onto my website for streaming. I am using premiere pro 1.5 and have exported to windows media 9 1024k. However the clip is 1:40 in length but takes up to 10 minutes on some machines. What should i be exporting to? Or is there some trick. My host is dreamhost and it allows quicktime streaming.

Thanks

Hey Jason, one way we did it was you can export the full quality .avi and import in into Windows Movie Maker and then save the file for the web with about 300kbs or whatever you choose and it comes out nicely. We just deal with flash now but that's how we used to do it on a pc. There are other ways to do it that would probably do it better, but that's the easiest way without having to buy any other software.

With the settings you have the file is going to take a while to load on many computers with slower connections. Premiere Pro has different streaming codecs that are between 300-800 kbps, which is probably the best way to stream to all PC users.

Keep in mind that many MAC users will not be able to view those files, so you may want look at a cross-capatible format such as .MOV or like Eric mentioned flash .FLV files.

jason, less than 3% of the computers on the 'net are macs, so cross-compatibility probably won't be much of an issue... and there are wmv players for the mac.

try picking a wmv encoding profile that goes with something like 320x240, 512kbps video, maybe 48kbps max audio... you can also put up a second clip for dial-up users, just encode it with the standard dial-up 56kbps dial up profile.

encoding web video is no different than learning how to make dvd's... in order to create a quality product, you have to spend some time practicing the craft.

streaming is a technology that requires special server.
if you just put video on a web server, it is not streaming, but at best pseudo streaming, so you are very dependant of the total size of the movie and the bandwith. with real streaming, you are just dependant of the bandwith.
