I have a FX1 and a cheaper sony mini dv camera and wanted to know if its okay to use the same cleaning tape in both cameras our just use it in one camera. I would hate to damage the heads so Im wondering if it would be a bad idea to do this. Thanks a lot.

For ± $12 each, I wouldn't mind having one for each machine, but maybe that's too paranoid. This one was recommended to me on another thread.

One is fine, because they are basically a one use tape. You are not supposed to rewind them, use once all the way through and throw it away.

How many cleanings do you get?

I can't say, I as have never used one up, but maybe about 10 to 15 minutes at most. But, at about 6 to 10 seconds to a cleaning, I would think they would last a while. If you are worried, get a spare, and then do not open it. That way you don't mix them up and run them both out!

I might add, that quite a while back, I grabbed a tape off of my desk, and stuck it in an old camera to run some test footage. Problem was I grabbed a cleaning tape by mistake! It ran for 6 1/2 minutes before I realized what had happened. Luckily it did not damage the camera at all, and that's why I know there is at least 10 minutes.

Hi Nick:
Cleaning tapes are pretty abrasive. Run 'em 10 seconds max.

I knew not to use them too long, but wasn't quite sure how long. Thanks for the tip.
