I guess the best way is just manual adjustment. Shoot for the peek in the 10db range and not the 0+ range

ThanksIf it's an attenuator cable then yes it's fixed at 10db or 20db or whatever the cable is rated at. It will connect in-line between your mic and the camera. I think it may be a minijack connection, so you may also need an XLR-to-minijack convertor (or two). not sure about that.
Laurence Kingston has an ME64 and an A1 and he uses attenuator cable so perhaps do a search for posts by him about "attenuator" or "attenuation" and that might give some info from his side of things.

Wait, so attenuation cables aren't XLR? I'd like 10db attenuation that plugs both into my XLR connection of my mic as well as into my Sony audio module (XLR).

well they aren't necessarily XLR-connectors at the end of the attenuation cable. Might be mini-jack connectors. you'll just have to check the specs of the cable you're buying.
