are video files sent as e-mail attachments actually just an adress to get access to that file on the senders computer or is it it's own neat little package. In other words, if I send a video file as an attachment with an e-mail to someone and I turn off my own computer, will they still be able to view it. I should already know this but I don't. Thanks

If you're attaching the file to the e-mail, then they get the file, not a link.

As David said. Attachments pass on. The big worry is that mail gateways along the way may limit attachment sizes. Some limit to 1 or 5MB, so you have to be aware that a limit may be in place for some customers. In cases like that, you may need to investigate using FTP to "put" or they would "get" the file. Also, the e-mail administrator may be able to change the mail system rules for a specific customer so that the limit is not in place or restricted for all but certain e-mail addresses (yours).

Also note that some attachment types may not be permitted through an e-mail gateway because of attachment type. That can also vary depending on current application vulnerabilities floating around. Example, expect any .DOC file to be delayed in arrival or to not arrive for the next month because of a new vunerability found in the wild in MS Word this week.

If you send an "attachment" as a link in the text of you message (type, not a dragged and dropped icon), such as "file://c:\file.mov" or "\\server\file.mov", then yes, it would not work and even with your computer on, in all likelihood, would not work.

there is also www.yousendit.com which allows you to upload a file up to 100 mb for free.. and then it will send an email to the person you want to recieve the video file(or any file for that matter) and they can download it.. I use this service all the time.. its free for up to 100 mb.. the file will sit there for 7 days..

A ZIP file lets you compress a file so it's smaller size. Video is normally highly compressed already, so converting it into a zip file won't make the file smaller by much.

Free services like yousendit.com are probably the best way to send video attachments. Just make sure your video isn't too bad, because it'll take quite some time to upload it.
